Moffitt Starts His First 2008 ASALMS Event at O’Reilly Raceway Park , Indianapolis

Posted by Tom Ames | 04/27/08

Ankeny, IA (April 25, 2008) – Fifteen year old Brett Moffitt made his first appearance of the 2008 ASALMS series season, competing in the Ken Willis, 5K Motorsports Team, Chevy Impala SS powered by a GM Performance Parts 604 Crate Engine. In his only his second time ever in an asphalt Late Model, Moffitt qualified 12th for the ASALMS Northern Tour Series event. Forty one drivers where on hand with the top 20 qualifiers lining up in front of six provisional starters, filling the twenty six car field.

Starting the 100 lap Feature Event from his sixth row outside position, Moffitt quickly moved into the top ten, running as far up as eighth, racing against seasoned ASALMS veterans and asphalt Late Model champions. On lap seventy, Moffitt learned what miss-fortune is all about as an over aggressive competitor gave the #5 car a bump going down the back stretch after one of several restarts. In a spin, Moffitt was able to keep his ride off the wall, gathering it up and making it to pit road under caution. Unable to replace a right rear spring lost during the spin, without going a lap down, Moffitt was sent back onto the track just ahead of the Karl Chevrolet sponsored Pace Car, for the restart. Needing another yellow to replace the missing spring, the 5K Motorsports team readied themselves, poised for a quick replacement if and when the opportunity presented its self. With the maturity of a veteran and the determination of a young rookie, Moffitt managed to stay competitive and on the lead lap for the next twenty laps. A caution on lap ninety gave the crew just what they were looking for, just enough time to replace the missing right rear spring. On the restart and from the rear of the field, the young Moffitt proved his driving skills, passing cars and racing back to a very respectable eleventh place finish.

“It was very exciting to be there and watch Brett start what I believe will be a very successful ASALMS racing career”, commented Chuck Stowe, GM Performance Parts Representative from ASALMS Pace Car sponsor, Karl Chevrolet. “I have seen Brett compete in his IMCA SportMod and have been impressed with his racing poise and skills, tonight he made a huge leap forward”, added Stowe. “It was my first ASA Late Model Series event this year and I want to thank Ron and Sandy Varney and the entire ASALMS staff for the warm reception and hospitality I received, I look forward to attending more ASALMS events during the 2008 season”, concluded Stowe.
