Accord, NY - Andy Bachetti Romps To Accord Win On Mombaccus Excavating Night
By Steve Pados, Accord Media
Sheffield, Massachusetts driving star Andy Bachetti rim-rode his Albreada Waste sponsored race car to a convincing win last night before another packed house at the Accord Speedway. Bachetti, who began the Rhinebeck Ford Modified feature from 12th starting position, was on the move early in the event and while the fireworks at the speedway are not scheduled until the 27th of June, a chain of events led to some early season theatrics at the Ulster County speed plant. Front row starting Dom "The Iceman" Roselli took off at the drop of the green flag and polesitter Tom Demarmels followed in hot pursuit. Roselli was cutting out some quick laps on the raceway and led through lap-8 when track rookie Demarmels drove into the third turn too hot and clipped the tail-end of the Roselli racer, spinning him sideways to the inside of the racetrack. Demarmels spun to the outside lanes of the raceway and collected rookie driver Danny Tyler. Tyler with no where to go, backed into the fence and began to peel off the third turn billboards in a spectacular display of destruction. The remainder of the field, with no available real estate at their disposal, began to assemble in third three and when the last race car finally came to a halt, 21 cars were involved in the melee. One by one the cars began to pull away the wreckage, some intact and some limping towards the pit area. A few cars remained hooked together until all of the wreckers and track crew could be utilized to free them.
After a lengthy delay the racing was able to continue, Modified rookie David Bush set sail in his Freskeeto's Food Service sponsored mount. Bachetti, who restarted sixth, was on the move and moved into the runnerup role on lap-14. Bush was enjoying a 6-car length advantage at the time but the "Wild Child" decided to take his mount topside and rim-rode the outside cushion to cut into the advantage quickly. Sweeping into turn three on lap-17, Bachetti powered his way around Bush off of turn-4 and led the final few laps to record his initial win of the season at Accord. With the curfew approaching quickly, the Modified feature was reduced by 10-laps. For Bachetti, the win made it two in a row as he was triumphant in the season opener last week at Lebanon Valley. Bush, in a great run, finished second. Scott Ferrier continued his great early season work by finishing third in his great looking Orange Energy sponsored mount. Donnie Elliott was smooth in a steady run to wind up fourth and Demarmels enjoyed a good run in the Jeff Mastercola ride to finish fifth. Garden Stater John Dixon had another solid run to finish in sixth and early leader Dom Roselli finished seventh. Danny Creeden, John McGill and Bill Papula completed the top ten.
In the Enzo's Ristorante & Pizza Pro Stock feature, Canaan, Connecticut hotshoe Jon Routhier took the lead on lap-5 and drove to a solid victory in the 20-lap event. The win would prove to be short-lived as the Routhier race car came up light at the scales and Routhier was disqualified from the event. The turn of events enabled Bill Deak Jr to claim the victory. Bill Deak Sr was in the runnerup slot and Rookie Don J Williams enjoyed a great run to finish third. Charlie Schwartz Jr recovered from an early spin to race back to fourth and Larry Temple Jr completed the top five.
The Accord Mini Sprints made their first appearance of the season and the initial start found newcomer Rick Russell hopping the rear wheel of Mark Rogers and snap-rolling his mount in front of the grandstands. Russell was uninjured in the incident and later returned to action. On the restart Todd Lapp moved to the lead and led the first 6-laps of the event when the caution was displayed for the disabled machine of Timmy Durland. On the restart, Mark Guerard, a champion at Moto-Town in 2008, sailed past Lapp and moved to a 6 car length advantage. Lapp, changed lanes and began to close the distance with Guerard. Lapp regained the lead on lap-11 and proceeded to distance himself from the field to win a convincing victory. Guerard was in for a nice runnerup finish and JD Casazza, Karl Pittenger and Gary Reyer completed the top five running order.
The Bryant's Towing Pure Stock event found Mike Deyo blasting into the lead at the start of the event. Some heated competition behind him found a lot of scrambling for position among the ranks. Gary Ronk provided the early heat on Deyo, but Deyo was able to keep the Showalter's Equipment mount in the lead spot. Joe Judge, using every racing lane he could find, threaded his way through the pack and was able to move in behind Deyo and made his successful bid to jump into the lead on lap-8. With the curfew at hand, a spin on lap-9 halted the action and Jope Judge was in for his first feature event win of the new campaign. Deyo was second in a great ride with Paul Aragon Jr finishing third. Steve Smalley raced from his starting 17th spot to claim fourth at the checkered flag in a very determined driving effort. Bill Hallstead had his ride working well and rounded out the top five.
The heldover Camper's Barn Sportsman event found Warwick, New York veteran David Coene jumping to the lead from his pole start to capture the 20-lap event. The racing was heated from start to finish as Danbury, Connecticut veteran Larry Badaracco applied the pressure on Coene for most of the race and even pulled even on a couple of occasions only to find Coene more that up to the task at hand to hold off the determined Badaracco. Howard Jarvis ran a great race to finish third, and Justin Holland rode the cushion to come across the line in fourth. Ray See Jr, who spun early in the race, recovered and rallied to a fine fifth place finish.
The regular Camper's Barn Sportsman feature and the Heart Chevrolet Spec Sportsman feature were curfewed and will be completed at the first convenient opportunity.
Favorable weather conditions provided a great back drop for the second week of racing at the speedway. Promoter Gary Palmer and his track crew worked feverishly throughout the week to iron out some of the rough spots found in the raceway on opening night. The hard work paid off as the track was much smoother and racier than on opening night. The racers were more than a second faster this week on the clocks and side by side racing was commonplace in all divisions. Palmer and Company continue to work feverishly on the raceway to make it near-perfect and while some cosmetic work remains, the determined work effort seems to be appreciated by the drivers and fans alike.
Next Friday evening, Foamco will sponsor the evening's racing card and $2,250.00 will await the Modified winner in the winner's circle. Pit Gates will open at 4:30 with Spectator Gates opening at 5. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30 with the racing slated to begin at 7. Admission remains at $12.00 for Adults and $3.00 for Children 11 and under.
MUDPLUGS:
Another jam-packed pit area added some new names to the already formidable driving rosters at the speedway. Former track regular, Ladd Yeomans drove the second Rockbuster mount and recorded a second place finish in the Consolation event. "Smokin" Joe Narok made his first appearance of the season and qualified for the main in the Pure Stock feature. Bill Rion jumped up to the Pro Stocks and did a good job in the Al Christiana Sr machine. Rich Lybolt drove up from North Carolina and handled the Steve Eubanks machine to qualify for the main event. AJ Williams made his first trip to Accord a successful one as he qualified for the main in his first ever drive in a Sportsman racer. Veteran Modified campaigner Karl Pittenger made a start in the Scott Goodrich owned Mini sprint and raced to a fourth place finish in the event. Jimmy Halpin made his first appearance of the year in the Modified ranks, as did Accord resident Barry Davis in a sharp looking new Modified.
Shane Jablonka, Steve Meilleur Randy Banks won the Sportsman heats with Greg McCloskey winning the consi. Jerry Higbie, Tom Demarmels and Dom Roselli captured the Modified heats with the consi going to Rich Ricci Jr. Sammy Dwy, Vinnie DeCicco and John Lieto captured the Spec Sportsman heats.
Jon Routhier and Scott Mill won the Pro Stock heats. 15-year old Tommy "Tommy-Gunn" Johnson, Mike Deyo and Paul Aragon Jr won the Pure Stock heat action.
Bachetti's Auto Sales provided the $250.00 Modified Bonus for the evening's racing and quite fitting for Andy Bachetti to claim the award.
A couple of time consuming incidents led to the curfew of the pair of feature events. The first delay came when an ambulance was summoned to escort an injured person to the hospital. This led to a one half hour delay before another ambulance could be brought to the racetrack. The second incident occurred with the huge pile-up during the course of the Modified feature, again causing more than a half hour delay to clear the raceway before the racing could resume.
The Palmer Family would like to thank all of the sponsors, competitors, fans and staff for their support of the Accord Speedway. While the 2008 racing season marks the 8th year the Palmer Family has owned and promoted the speedway, the winter construction project was the largest undertaking the family has made since taking over the reigns. More work remains to be done at the track, but being able to open the speedway on schedule was a monumental task in itself. The new season, given a bit of time, will prove to be the best season to date since the Palmers took over the reigns at the facility, aptly named the "Gem in the Catskills"
