Weedsport, NY – May 1, 2008 – By Dan Kapuscinski, Rolling Wheels Raceway Park PR and Promotions Coordinator
Rolling Wheels Raceway Park will swing open its gates for the first time in 2008 on Sunday, May 4 for the 28th Annual DIRT Challenge Cup. The event will mark the first Super DIRTcar Series race of the season in the state of New York, and will also feature the DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds.
Pit gates will open at 2pm on Sunday with grandstand admission beginning at 3pm, and the green flag waving at 5pm.
The mighty Big-Block Modifieds of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series will run Twin 50 feature events. Dig Safely New York and Ferris Mowers will present the two 50-lap features.
Last season the 27th edition of the DIRT Challenge Cup featured a 60-lap affair with Billy Decker claiming top honors. Decker dominated the last half of the event, running away from Brett Hearn by over a full straight away for the win. Jimmy Phelps, Tim Fuller, and Matt Sheppard rounded out the top five finishers.
The ‘Fast Track’ in Elbridge, NY is one of the founding Speedways of the DIRTcar banner, and has hosted the most Super DIRTcar Series events of any other Speedway (76). Many of the top teams and drivers throughout the history of DIRTcar Modified racing have graced victory lane, and 2008 should be no different.
Look for Decker and Hearn to battle at the top once again with Jimmy and Ryan Phelps, Sheppard, Alan Johnson, Gary Tomkins, and the rest of the gang tight on their heels.
Joining the Big-Block Modifieds will be the DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds. The GM Crate engine class has been the toast of the early 2008 season, with tremendous racing and car counts across the state.
Chris Hile, Paul Guererri, Todd Henderson, Chris Higgins, and Joe Williams picked up wins last year at the ‘Fast Track’. However, all but Henderson have moved up to the 358 or Modified divisions. As a result look for Henderson to be one of the favorites, but drivers like Tim Currier, Dan Wiesner, Eric Giguere and recent first time feature winner Dave Marcuccilli will have something to say about that in the running of the ‘Westbury Lumber 25.’
Tickets for the 28th Annual DIRT Challenge Cup will be made available at the gate. Adult general admission is set at $20, $18 for Seniors (Age 65+), $5 for children (Ages 10-14), and those under the age of 9 are FREE.
