Granville Pennsylvania was apparently the popular place to be last Friday evening. Redline Raceway opened its gates for the first time in 2008 for Friday night racing action. Fans packed the house and race teams packed the pits for what would be a very exciting night of racing in the Endless Mountains.
Following the qualifying heats the "Mighty" Modifieds took to the very well prepared red clay racing surface. The Modifieds crawled slowly out onto the track and prepared for a 25 lap shoot out. The 2007 defending champion Brent Boyer from Bloomsburg, Pa., and The 3 of Ricky Yetter out of Bethleham Pa., led the feature field to the start. Yetter wasted no time in taking the point with Boyer following in second. After 3 cautions early on the 77 of Butch Cerullo from Beach Havan Pa., moved past Boyer to claim the runner up position. Kevin Hartnett from Granville, Pa., driving the Stiler Kline 55 moved up from his 7th starting position to move into the 3rd spot by lap 10. Following a restart on lap 10 the 55 of Hartnet drove into turn 1 trying to gain the second spot from the 77 of Cerullo, Hartnett made heavy contact with the 77 ending Cerullo's evening. The 55 would restart from the round out position. Yetter and Boyer by lap 15 borke away from the rest of the field and survived 3 more cautions. Yetter took his first victory of 2008. Boyer crossed the stripe in second. Mike Schane in his M16 started 9th and quietly moved through the field and took home third.
Next on tap would be the Nationally sanctioned I.M.C.A. Modifieds. The 86B of Andy Ritter from Mansfield, Pa., and "Dangerous" Don Cole in his 27 from Canton, Pa., took the field to the green. Ed Sites wasted no time in taking over the top position on lap one in his number 15. Scott Bennett charged into second with the 2007 defending champion Mark Griffin bolting into thrid. Bennett on lap 4 tried to hold off the hard charging 11K of Griffin but Griffin slid to the inside of Bennett off turn 3 and took the second spot away. Sites was still out in front but Griffin had closed the gap by lap 6 where the two battled door to door. Griffin off turn 2 pulled a 4 car length advantage over Sites with Bennett trailing in third. Following a restart on lap 13 Sites in second bobbled a bit in turn 2 allowing Bennett to power past and take over second. The front three remained the same Griffin, Bennett, and Sites following a caution on lap 15. Bennet by lap 17 looked as though he may have had something for Griffin off turn 4 . The front two were glued nose to tail for the remaining laps. Mark Griffin took home his first victory of 2008 followed by Scott Bennett in second and Eddie Sites crossing the stripe in third.
The Pure Stocks were up to bat next for their 20 lap feature. Danny Matthews in the Van Cise 83T from Elmira, NY., and the veteran Terry Potrzebowski also from Elmira in his 72 escorted the field to the start. The front two Potrzebowski and Matthews ran neck and neck the first circuit around. Potrzebowski on the second lap powered ahead of Matthews and took over the point. Matthews had problems on lap three when he stopped off turn 2. Potrzebowski remained the leader but the 2007 defending champion Nick Robinson from Chemung, came charging up from his 5th starting spot to take over second place. Robinson tried to overtake Potrzebowski but the 72 was very strong through the rest of the feature. Potrzebowski and Robinson made it a two car breakaway in the closing laps and Terry Potrzebowski took his first feature win of the season. Nick Robinson with a strong performance crossed the stripe in second and Josh Parker also with a good run in the 4g came home in third.
Next to try their luck were the Mini Stocks. Elmira NY., native A.J. Potrzebowski with Larry Colton from Troy, Pa., led the Mini field to the green. The 72 of Potrzebowski took the lead first thing. The 79k of James Kriedler moved inside of Eric Ellsworth for the 4th spot on lap 3. Krielder continued his charge to the front on lap 7 where he took over the 3rd position. A.J. Potrzebowski was still the leader but a battle waged on behind him. James Kriedler ran dead even with Larry Colton in the closing laps. Kriedler was able to power past the 36 of Colton and take over second. A.J. Potrzebowski claimed his first victory in 2008 with Kriedler taking second and Larry Colton finishing in third. Following post race inspection Kriedler was disqualified for unapproved tires. That gave Larry Colton second and Doug Colton third.
Last to compete for the evening were the 4 cylinder Hobby Stocks. Harry Ely of Wyalusing in his 57 and Cody Soper from East Troy, in his 77 led the Hobby Stock field to the green. Ely And the 17 of Bob Schultz went nose to nose for 3 laps to start the feature. Schultz eventually took over the top position and never looked back from there taking his first win of the season. Harry Ely with a strong performance took second. Joe Dunn from Towanda, Pa., moved up to thrid on lap 8 and that is where he would cross the stripe.
People's State Bank of Wyalusing Pa., will be sponsoring the exciting racing action this Friday evening. Gates open at 5, warm ups at 7, qualifying to begin at 8 p.m.
The Matthews family (owners and promoters) of Redline would like to extend a big thank you to all the great fans as well as all the great race teams for coming out and supporting the raceway like you did Friday evening. Your support and attendance is greatly appreciated. Thank You.........
