(Woodhull, NY) Mother Nature was once again the big winner last Saturday at the Woodhull Raceway as for the second consecutive week late afternoon rain storms put an end to any chance of getting the show into the record books. “Last year we were able to beat the odds most ever time that it did rain on Saturday’s, stated track owner, Vern Wasson. In 2007 most every late day rain storm that did hit the track moved thru relatively quickly and we were able to recover and get the show completed. Not the case this year as the past two Saturday’s these storms have lingered and intensified making it impossible to do anything but cancel.”
Wasson, who is notorious for not giving in to Mother Nature has a philosophy of giving the racers, fans and sponsors every opportunity to see action. “Granted the racing season has definitely gotten longer over the past few years. We start earlier in the year and go into October without skipping a week. However with all the Special Events and outside Touring Groups that we accommodate throughout the season we have to try our best to get each and every show completed to say nothing about the loyal sponsor base that we have at Woodhull. Months are spent in the off season putting the schedule of events together and when we loose a show it many times puts a burden on our nightly event sponsors.”
Both Knight Settlement Sand and Gravel along with Machuga Contractors who were to have sponsored the May 3 event will be invited back at a later date.
Prior to the cancellation a pair of 358 Modified heats were completed and the third was on the track when the rains came. All total 136 cars representing 6 classes of action had checked in for the night of activity with 27 Crate Sportsman and 27, 358 Modifieds heading up the list.
Next week it will be the annual running of the Scott Dennison Memorial for the Napa 360 Late Model Division with gates opening at 4:30 and racing at 6:30.
