CORTEZ, Colo. (May 2-3) Zane Devilbiss earned his first EQ Cylinder
Heads Wild West Tour win, while Ricky Alvarado chalked up his career
10th in the series for IMCA Modifieds at Fairgrounds Speedway.
Devilbiss topped Fridays opening show for IMCA Modifieds at Cortez,
while defending tour champion Alvarado raced to the Saturday checkers
by taking the lead back from Chase Hansen coming to the line.
Both 30-lap contests paid $1,000 to win, making Devilbiss the newest
qualifier for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Alvarado
was already vote eligible.
Friday pole starter Troy McElroy ran in front the first circuit
before Devilbiss worked his way ahead from outside row two. Ryan
Dimick wrestled the second spot away from McElroy on lap 11 and
chased Devilbiss the rest of the way.
Alvarado made his way through the field twice, after starting 16th
and then again following a lap 11 trip to the pit area to finish
third. Hansen rounded out the top four and McElroy ended in fifth.
Hansen was quickly ahead of the pack on Saturday, leading the first
four laps before Alvarado took charge.
The front pair threaded through backrunners, lapping up to 10th
place. Hansen edged ahead on lap 29, but Alvarado found the fastest
line out of turn four to take the win by less than half a car length.
Further back, a three- and four-wide tussle ended with J.R. Herrera
taking third place points.
Regan Tafoya was fourth and Dimick was fifth.
Fifty-two cars were entered each night. Two more Colorado dates are
up next as the EQ Wild West Modified Tour next travels to Alamosa
Motor Speedway in Mosca for Saturday and Sunday, May 24-25 events.
