Pete Bicknell Enters BRP CanAm Late Model Event
St. Catharines, ONT…Pete Bicknell, a 19 time Merrittville Speedway track champion, will try something different on Saturday May 17 when the BRP CanAm Late Model Series visits the Merrittville Speedway. Bicknell will buckle up in one of Paul Grigsby’s 360 late models and attempt to add yet another credit to his racing resume – a win in the BRP CanAm Late Model Series.
Mr. Small Block reports, “This deal came up as either a promotional idea or simply a way to keep me busy on a night that I planned to just hang out. Since the modifieds are not on the schedule that night I figured that the only track time that I would get would be on the grader. However, the ladies made other plans. Erica (daughter and GM of Merrittville Speedway) thinks that maybe a few more fans will attend the show to see this old guy tricycle one of those late models. Nancy (wife and partner at the track and BRP) simply figures if I am racing I will not be bothering her. Tracey (Williamson, another track and BRP partner) assumed that I would be a bigger problem if I wasn’t racing. Anyway, somehow they put this deal together and I think it is awesome. I tested the car here a few weeks ago when nobody knew who was in it. I thought if I was a complete disaster I would not embarrass myself, but it was great. We put a transponder in the car to get some accurate data. I was surprised. First, I was comfortable right away. Second, although those cars have a little less horsepower and weigh a little more it was a hoot! Lap times were just a tick slower than the modified, but they drive differently and it was really fun. With all of the aluminum (Wrisco Racing Aluminum), plastic, and fiberglass those cars are really glued down. I had to work hard to spin the thing out. When I did, I guess I about scared Paul’s wife (Stacy) to hysteria. She didn’t know I had tried for several laps and only with a real bonsai effort could I get it to spin.”
“I want to thank Paul Grigsby and his team for this opportunity. I have already told them that I thank them, but I plan to beat them on race night. The car was built by Ed Carley and Larry Shaw using a lot of BRP supplied parts. Billy Campbell built the engine. I will have no excuses if I do not qualify. Seriously, I doubt that I can win against those guys who race that style of car every week, but you know very well that I will give it my best shot.”
We all have the opportunity to see Pete Bicknell go up against the BRP CanAm Late Model Series racers on Saturday May 17 at Merrittville Speedway. Gates open at 5:00 with races at 7:00
