In the Pizza Hut Late Models, Imperial, PA's Dave Wade drove to a big win in the 25 lap feature, his first of the season. Wade and Jim Lepro brought the field down for the green. Coming around to complete the first lap, Lepro spun causing the entire field to dodge him. Unfortunately Larry Marks could not and hit him eliminating both for the night. With a complete restart on the next lap, Wade grabbed the lead with Keith Rodriguez in tow. Wade started to open up a lead while a large pack battled behind him headed by Rodriguez. Alex Ferree battled with Rodriguez, while Lynn Geisler, Steve Baker and Brandon Burgoon ran behind. Wade widened his lead while the battle for second continued. On lap 9, seventh starting Baker got by both Rodriguez and Ferree and set sail for Wade, who had built up over a ½ lap lead and was lapping back markers. Ninth starting Al Atallah got by Rodriguez on lap11 and also set sail for Wade and Baker. Atallah caught Baker and the pair battled for second by lap 16 with Atallah getting by on lap 17. The pair was still looking at running down Wade and they were closing the gap, but needed a yellow and got none. Wade maintained a comfortable margin at the checker, which went non-stop from the opening lap yellow. Atallah ended up second followed by Baker, 12th starting Jared Miley, Alex Ferree, Rodriguez, Geisler (who had slowed a bit after tagging the turn two wall), Mike Johnson, Brandon Burgoon, and Ben Miley. The heats for the 24 cars went to Brandon Burgoon, Steve Baker, and Lynn Geisler. A mistake in last week's press release left fifth finishing Keith Rodriguez out of the story but not out of the summary. Sorry for the error, Keith.
In the Brougher's Machine Shop Crate Late Models, Mike Pegher, Jr. of Wexford, PA, grabbed his first win ever in the class after a torrid battle with Tom Schirnhofer and Daniel Angelicchio. Schirnhofer grabbed the lead at the start with Pegher and Angelicchio right behind. The trio battled for the front spot until lap 5 when Pegher Jr. finally got by. Angelicchio got by Schirnhofer for second on lap 11 and set sail for Pegher Jr. The pair battled for the front spot for several laps, and Angelicchio pulled even coming down the front straight on lap 15 and ran up on a lapped car, which caused Angelicchio to spin. On the restart, Pegher Jr. who started 6th, had the field covered and pulled away for the win. Bryant Hank had a career best second followed by Josh Holtgraver, Schirnhofer. Angelicchio recovered to finish fifth, with Mark Moats in sixth followed by Dennis Curry (in son Dusty's car), Terry Kerr, Darrell Dow and Tim Stefanick. The heats fell to Daryl Charlier and Josh Holtgraver. A big wreck on a restart on lap 9 claimed the cars of Daryl Charlier, Stefanick, Dow, Justin Lamb, Kerr, Scott Schempp and Louie Bradich. Kerr, Dow, and Stefanick were able to continue, the rest were not. Pete Loria tagged the wall on lap 3 and was done for the night. Russ Kolesar was also involved in the lap 9 wreck but made a few more laps minus the front end sheet metal. We made a mistake in last week's press release, and had Russ Kolesar as the one who tagged Laura Lukon causing her to flip, but it was not. Our apologies to Russ.
In the Miley Truck Rental E-Mods, J.E. Stalder picked up his first win of the season. The Martins Ferry, OH driver grabbed the lead on lap 4 after battling with early leader Wayne Tessean. While 5th starting Stalder dominated most of the race, most eyes were on young Jacob Hawkins, who was making his first start this season in the class in Junior Nolan's car. Hawkins spun on the first lap, went on to the tail and charged thru the pack and moved into second by lap14, but fell short at the finish. The front running pair was followed by Daryl Charlier, Mike Basich, Kevin Miller, Tessean, Tom Martineck, Shawn Scheerbaum, Clayton Kennedy, and Bruce Dreistadt to round out the top 10. The heats had Jacob Hawkins and Kevin Miller pick up wins.
In the Sunoco Race Fuels Pure Stocks, Jake Simmons of McKees Rocks, PA, one of the classes top winners last season, picked up his first win of 2008. Simmons grabbed the lead at the outset from his pole starting spot and held off Pat Weldon the first 4 laps. Former track champ Craig Kamicker moved into second on lap 5 and chased Simmons the rest of the way. Damage, Inc. teammate Joe Anthony was third, with Weldon in fourth followed by opening night winner Bill Robertson, Nick Kocuba, Bob Schwartzmiller, Steve Webb, Mitch Wattelet, and Bob Heim. The heats saw Bill Robertson and Craig Kamicker grab wins.
The Flynn Tire & Auto Amateurs saw former track champ Robby Torrens battle Eric Goldberg most of the event to pick up his first win of the season. Torrens, from Kennedy Twp., PA, grabbed the lead at the start but held off charges from Goldberg from lap 3 on.
Opening night winner Tony White was a strong third followed by Darren Ferguson, Curt Bish, Brian Huchko, Edward Wiser, Don Duseheid, J.J. O'Patchen and Tanya Maxwell. The lone heat went to Eric Goldberg.
Mike Reft, of Whitehall, PA, picked up his second win of the young season in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns division. Reft, starting 4th, took the lead off Todd Janus on lap 4 and held off archrival Rich Mason to pick up the win. Justin Pons was third followed by Tyler Atkinson, Sean Graham, Janus, Tyler Fox, Daniel White, Brian Beyerbach and Hannah Ramsey.
