Action returned to the high banks of Laurens County Speedway Saturday night with some very exciting racing. In the Coca-Cola Super Late Models the front row consisted with the #22 GRT machine of Billy Rushton and defending track champ Frankie Coates. The two heat winners led the field down to the green with Coates able to jump ahead on the start. Going into turn one and two Billy Rushton was able to settle into second with Tony Quarles, Mike Ashley, and Chris Lyons making it three wide for third. Mike made the best off of two as he powered into third. At the end of lap one it was Frank Coates, Billy Rushton, Mike Ashley, Tony Quarles, and Colby Cannon. Coates was able to pull away as Billy Rushton and Mike Ashley picked up their battle from last week. The two went door-to-door lap after lap while Quarles and Cannon did the same. Finally Ashley was able to pull along side Rushton down the back stretch and pulled ahead coming out of four. A caution then bunched up the field on lap 16. On the restart Coates, who hadn’t been challenged, quickly found out that Ashley was right with him as contact was made coming out of turn two. The two put on a show for the fans as Ashley pounded Coates for the remainder of the race. Frank Coates (Hodges) was able to hold on as he captured his first Coca-Cola Super Late Model win of the season in his Enviro Vac, Werts Backhoe, Barry’s Custom Tree Service, CE Borne & Co., Barry Wright Ford Fusion. Mike Ashley ( Greenwood ) was a close second with Billy Rushton (Hodges) third, Colby Cannon (Hodges) fourth, and Chris Lyons (Laurens) rounding out the top five.
