ESS EXTRA!!
Cornwall Motor Speedway, Cornwall, Ontario
Arguably one of the most successful Sunday night tracks not only in Canada but all of North America comes the Cornwall Motor Speedway. Sunday night is usually “taboo” in local motorsports but Cornwall has bucked the norm and flourished through the guiding eyes of one Ron Morin.
A little quarter-mile no less, is located north of Ontario’s well known city of Cornwall and on an average Sunday you will see some 3, 000 folks in the stands if not more. On special nights such as the annual two visits by the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints that number will raise above 4,000 with standing room only usually the end result.
For 2008, the already successful facility will hit new heights on Sunday night, June 22nd where Morin is doing something special for the fans of Ontario and Quebec. It’s billed as the Triple Crown of Racing, the three most well known forms of dirt track classes all on one night. Late Models, courtesy of the World of Outlaws, winged sprint cars, from ESS itself and modifieds with Cornwall’s own DIRTcar 358 modifieds on the card. Three classes, one night, one incredible memory!
Also on the Cornwall ’08 sked., is a second appearance by ESS, the Advanced Auto Parts Series for both big and small block modifieds as well as the Lucas Oil Series for small blocks. This will be definitely a year to remember.
Local drivers of interest will be Brian McDonald, who lives in the shadows of the speedway and is attacking the ESS tour fulltime, former small block standout Lee Ladouceur and north country legend Rick Wilson along with his son Kyle and daughter April.
The fast oval will produce the quickest times on the Lucas Oil tour with the sprinters getting into the 11 second range. The circular, high banked track makes for wild side by side action for the sprints. The grandstand will reach from turn four and wrap around parts of turn one. Several buildings are used as VIP sponsor suites and official’s tower with several concession stands located right underneath these buildings. The pits are located off turns three and four along with the very successful go-cart track. The infield is clear and is accented by beautiful green grass.
