by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Last Saturday night New York Modified star Bobby Varin captured his second win of the season at the Fonda Fairgrounds as he rocketed through the field to take the lead on the 16th lap of the rescheduled 30-lap feature event and roared to his 35th career win at the famous Montgomery County oval. Varin began his assualt to the front from his 12th starting position. Varin's son Danny was the early leader of the event as the youngster powered his Ed Monger owned Magarus numbered 93 Bicknell car into the front at the drop of the green flag. Danny Varin looked real good as the Rookie has proved early on he has the necessary tools
to race with the big boys at Fonda. While Danny Varin led the race, making his way to the runner-up position was many time track champion Dave Lape and the veteran campaigner was showing some strength in his retro-22 car. The caution came out on for the first time on lap-6 as defending track champion Matt DeLorenzo was sitting agianst the turn-3 fence with front end damage. By this time Bobby Varin had already moved into the top five.
On the restart, Danny Varin again powered away. Lape kept the pressure on him and took over the lead on lap-11. By this time Bobby Varin had moved into 3rd place. One lap later Bobby Varin passed his son for the runnerup spot and set sail for the veteran Lape. On lap-16 Varin took over the lead with a great move that found him out front and nevered to be challenged as he went on to score his 35th career win at Fonda. Dave Lape did a great job to finish second, Jack Johnson was third, Pat Ward finished fourth and Alton Plamer completed the top five. Danny Varin rallied back from a flat tire on lap-19 to record a 13th place finish
Danny and Bobby both finished second in their heat events and Danny again took the lead at the staert of the regularly scheduled feature for the Modifieds. Danny Varin paced the field for ten laps before yielding to Mike Fusco who made an outside pass off of turn-4 to become the new leader. Meanwhile, Bobby Varin had suffered a flat and returned to the rear of the field. Ronnie Johnson used a restart on the 12th-lap to finally power into the lead and was never headed after that. On lap-13 a red flag was displayed as a massive pile-up blocked turn-4 entirely, catching Bobby and Danny Varin both in the 10-car mishap. Once the race restarted, it was all Ronnie Johnson as he scored his first win of the 2008 racing season. Pat Ward, Mike Fusco, Jack Johnson and Dustin Delaney rounded the top five. Bobby Varin was credited with a 9th place finish and Danny Varin a 20th in the final results.
The Victoria 200 that moved over to Utica Rome in the off-season from Fulton was held on Sunday night. The change of date and speedway didn't deter one of the best racing events of the season. Danny Varin was forced to sit the event out as too much damage was suffered the previous night at Fonda. Bobby Varin, again strapped into one of Nancy and Jake Spraker's rocketships, won one of the eight heats ran off to determine the starting field. Varin led the first 13-laps of the 200-lap grind but the red-hot Billy Decker used the outside lane to pwer his way into the lead. Decker led until lap-46 when his teammate Pat Ward found an opening on top of the raceway and made the move past Decker.
After the 100-lap break again Ward went top-side on the raceway to continue to pace the field. At times looking like he was threatening to run and away and hide from the rest of the field, Ward was trying to put as many lapped cars in between he and second place running Danny Johnson. With 50-laps remaining it appeared as though Ward was starting to slow down his run due to a tire problem. Johnson, seizing the moment, began to pressure and challenge Ward at all corners and eventually found the room to get by on the 160th-lap. Once in the lead, Johnson put a full straightaway lead between he and Ward. Johnson was in for the win and Ward, who led the most laps was in for the runnerup role again. Ward was racing with a bald right rear sneaker for the last 20-laps of the race.Billy Decker was third, Timmy Fuller was fourth, Willy Decker was fifth and Bobby Varin came across the line with a solid 6th place performance. Jimmy Phelps, Brett Hearn, Rick Laubach and Matt Sheppard completed the top ten.
Overall, it was a good weekend for the Varin family. Danny Varin has gotten off a good start in his rookie season in racing with the Modifieds. The young wheel-twister has proven he can race at the top level and is doing so very comfortably. With more laps under his belt, the teenager should soon be challenging the veterans for a better share of the purse. Bobby Varin is doing his usual great job as he his a master craftsman when it comes to getting around the tricky Fonda layout. he is hoping the early wins help propel his hopes for a fourth title at Fonda. The Varin Family will return to action this week at both Fonda and Utica Rome.
Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support during the 2007 season and hope for continued support into the 2008 racing season.
