(Mercer, PA).Racing action scheduled for Saturday night, May 17 at Mercer Raceway Park was cancelled for the fourth time this season due to a heavy thunderstorm that hit the speedway after 5 p.m. The Free Crawford County Night presented by the Oncology Wellness Institute of Meadville Medical Center and Armstrong has been postponed until Saturday, June 14.
"We can't catch a break with Mother Nature," stated 10th year owner Vicki Emig. "We were waiting until 2 p.m. today to make a decision. At that time there was a distinct clearing line, no additional rain on the radar, and the chance of rain throughout the evening was only about 20%. A huge cell formed on Lake Erie and dropped southeast taking a direct aim at us. We always try to make smart decisions and this one was certainly disheartening for everyone. We've lost half of our shows now and the one's we have completed have either been a threat of rain, waiting on rain to end, and/or just plain cold. Hopefully with Memorial Day weekend now upon us and summer just around the corner things will improve."
Coming up this weekend is American Thunder Weekend. The All-American "Spring Nationals" World Championship presented by Semi Service Express will take place on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with a rain date of Sunday at 6 p.m. On the card will be the Big Rig Semis, Smoker Tractors, Street Semis, and 4x4 Diesel Trucks.
Then on Monday, May 26 it's the "Steel Valley Memorial Day Classic" presented by Auto Service Express. The FASTRAK Northeast Touring Series for the McElwain Motors Late Models, Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Cars for $1,500 to-win, the Big Daddy's Speed Center Mod Lites in a STAR Championship Tour event, the Ken Carbone Memorial for $1,000 to-win, and the M&D Paving Mini Stocks. Racing begins early at 6 p.m. And don't forget about the Ray Baselj Benefit BBQ dinner from 12 noon until 6 p.m. rain or shine.
Mercer Raceway Park is located minutes from both Interstate 79 and 80 just off Route 19 on Fairground Road in Mercer, Pa. Dirt track racing and quality family entertainment are presented weekly late March through September.
