RAIN STOPS URC RISLONE JACK GUNN MEMORIAL SATURDAY NIGHT AT SELINSGROVE
SPEEDWAY
A field of fifty-five sprint cars turned out for the 3rd Annual URC/358
Jack Gunn Memorial at the Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night.
Unfortunately, after time trial qualifying, heavy rain moved into the
area forcing the cancellation of this event. Selinsgrove Promoter
Charlie Paige is to be commended for his efforts in trying to get this
show into the books. Just prior to warm-ups, a round of showers dumped
on the speedway but Paige, along with his outstanding track crew,
managed to bring the track back into near perfect condition.
Fifty-five sprint cars took time trials with a make-up of twenty-eight
360 (URC sprints) and 27 358 sprints. Just prior to the staging of heat
race qualifying, the rain moved in again, forcing the cancellation.
At the completion of time trials, it was Davey Franek who set fast time
of 18.280/104.298 mph. URC driver Randy West was second, stopping the
clock at 18.290/104.241 mph. Making up the top ten in time trials was
Blane Heimbach (358), Davey Sammons (URC), Dave Calaman (358), Ed Aikin
(URC), Larry Kelleher (358), Curt Michael (URC), Becca Anderson (URC)
and Robbie Stillwaggon (URC). Time trial results will stand (the same
process URC followed last year when the William Grove event was
cancelled after time trials because of rain) with the completion of this
event taking place on Saturday night, July 19. To make-up for the lost
show, a second Selinsgrove date for URC will be added on Saturday,
August 9th. The URC Rislone/358 Jack Gunn Memorial on July 19 will pay
$3,500.
Looking ahead to the coming weekend, the URC Rislone Sprint Series will
invade the Bridgeport Speedway on Saturday night, May 24 followed by a
return visit to the Delaware International Speedway on Saturday night,
May 31. Just three weeks out is the URC Rislone Sprint Nationals at the
Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, June 6. This event will pay
$4,000 to the winner. Drivers and Owners are reminded that there is a

Former URC Champion Dave Kelly was at Selinsgrove Speedway taking in the
URC action. URC is currently working on a Dave Kelly/Glenn Fitzcharles
Night, possibly to take place at the Delaware International Speedway
this summer. Without a doubt, Kelly and Fitzcharles are two of the most
popular drivers in URC history and this night could be a real treat for
the fans.
