LUCAS OIL EMPIRE SUPER SPRINTS CONTINUE HOLIDAY TRADITION THIS SUNDAY AT UTICA - ROME SPEEDWAY
VERNON , NY- This Sunday, May 25, the popular Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints will close out an action packed month of May at the Utica-Rome Speedway with their first of three visits to the fast half mile oval. Joining the action on Gates-Cole Associates night will be the four weekly divisions of 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. with racing starting at 5 p.m.
Again visiting on their traditional Memorial Day holiday weekend date, ESS continues their 25th Anniversary Tour at the Utica-Rome Speedway with many of the top 360 Sprint Car drivers in the region looking to take the SUNY Canton A-Main, worth $2,000. Justin Barger, Steve Poirier, Dan Kaszubinski, Alain Bergeron, Lance Yonge, Jeff VanDusen, Doug Emery, Jessica Zemken, Jason Barney, Gordy Button, Jeff Cook, and Bubby Kerrick are just some of the drivers expected in competition. Utica-Rome Speedway’s headline division, the 358-Modifieds, will also see action with opening night winner Stewart Friesen holding the early edge in the point standings. Close behind is two-time 358-Modified track champion Willy Decker and Pat Ward, who took the win on May 4. Another former track champ, Paul Jensen sits in fourth with Gus Schmidt in fifth. Other drivers looking for a feature win and to improve their positions for the $8,000 track championship include Paul Kinney, Mitch Gibbs, Ted Lamb, Bobby Varin, Alan Barker, John Ramsey, AJ Romano, Jim Davis, and Jamie Christian.
Mike Button and Casey Williams have each scored wins in the Sportsman divisions with Brad Alger finishing in the second spot in all three events competed so far in 2008. Jason Rood, Steve Way , Tim Nye, Matt Janczuk, Jim Rothwell, Jeremy Vunk, and Jack Miller are just some of the drivers that have shown the ability to grab a feature win.
Pro Stock action has been extremely competitive, with three different winners in the three events competed. Bret Belden, Shawn Frost, and Tom Denton have each scored wins with Bill Knapp and Jim Normoyle right in the mix. Other drivers looking for a top finish include Mark Effner, Dave Moyer, AJ Digsby, Ed Ostrander, Rob Seavy, and Ivan Joslin.
Surprisingly, the driver who has dominated action in the Pure Stock ranks, Russ Marsden, has been held winless in regular feature event action and sits just seventh in the standings. Ron Hawker has the early edge in the points, followed by Tim Janczuk, Chris Carr, Frank Hyatt, Waylan Wilczek, Phil Norman, Marsden, Chris Cunningham, Cale Hoffman, and Andy Potter.
