Hughes Chases Down for the Win.

Another blustery day greeted a huge crowd at the Southern Minnesota Speedplant on Olympic Fire and Protection and Bernard Bus Service Night at the speedway. With the United States Modified Touring Series on the early season northern swing and the WISSOTA Super Stocks and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds on the card as we honor those on this memorial weekend.

Up first was the US Army WISSOTA Super Stock feature with Cole Queensland getting the jump out of two but Ryan Siegle had other plans as he attacked on the low side. These two raced close for the first couple laps with Mike Loomis following behind in third. As the race up front continued, Brandon Jensen moved into third with fifteen to go. Jensen caught the leader as he moved under Siegle for the second spot and say on the rear bumper of Queensland. A caution with thirteen to go saw Queenaldn stay up front. Jensen was in second while a sneal peak through the field found last weeks winner Wyatt Wolfe Jr. slowly working his way to the front also. Jensen found while trying to work into the lead lost ground and Wolfe Jr. now was trying to pass him. With nine to go Wolfe Jr. worked into second and slowly moved up to the leader. After the final caution Chris Klinger worked on Wolfe Jr. to the finish as they followed Queensland across the line.

The $400 to win WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event was up first with Carroll’s Corn of Rochester donating an additional $100.00 to the feature winner to make it a cool $500 for tonight’s title. Ric Fynbo jumped out to the early lead on lap one but Kenny Wytaske had other plans on the night and by the end of lap two was screaming around the high side and took over the lead. Jerry young and Bobby Swanson had a good little race for third with Jared Boumeester looking for ground below them. Wytaske was slowly pulling away up front until a caution flew with eleven laps to go. ON the restart Wytaske led, Boumeester and Young still raced for second with Brandon Davis and AJ Wiste side by side behind them. Wiste took the spot and when Boumeester pushed up in turn two with eight to go, Wiste moved up to race with Young for second. With six to go Wytaske now pushed up in turn two with the race for second flying by and now becoming the race for the win. Wiste took control of the race during the last three laps and came hom with his first win of the season at the speedway.

Al Hejna led the field to the green for the thirty five lap United States Modified Touring Sereies event. Brad Waits quickly moved into second and on lap two moved around Hejna on the high side to take over the point. Derek Ramirez and Mike Sorensen were racing for third. For the first ten laps of the non-stop feature event there were lots of battles for position as they ran from top to bottom of the speedway. With twelve down most of the field was now working the upper half of the speedway as Dean Mahlstedt moved past Ramirez for fourth. Jason Hughes had slowly pulled his way forward from his eighth starting spot and was now racing Sorensen for third. Hughes and Mahlstedt were both able to make the middle of the track work for them as they charged forward. Up front Waits was making track around the field and with sixteen down as starting to work lapped traffic. Hughes now in third was a good ways back and now the issue for Waits was how well he handled the lapped cars. Waits was working them good with twenty laps down he had a few car lengths lead over Hejna who held the same lead over Hughes. Five laps late the race for second was now on as they went side by side around the speedway. Hughes took the spot two laps later and started to gain on Waits. Three laps left and Hughes was now there racing Waits for the lead. Hughes took a slight advantage as the white flag started to wave and kept the lead to the checkers.
