SUNY CANTON STREET STOCK SERIES THIS SUNDAY AT UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY ON AIR GAS EAST NIGHT
VERNON , NY- The second visit of the SUNY Canton Street/Pure Stock Series visits the Utica-Rome Speedway this Sunday, June 1, on Air Gas East night. The mighty 358-Modifieds join the action along with the Sportsman and Pro Stocks. The evening full of racing excitement begins at 5:30 p.m. with gates opening at 3 p.m.
Track regular Russ Marsden has found early success early on in the SUNY Canton Street/Pure Stock Series, leading the points after four events. With one win so far in the series, Marsden is the only competitor to have finished in the top ten in every event completed. Dave Mannise, Ron Hawker, Kenny Hamm, and Todd Raabe trail Marsden in the overall series standings. In the first event competed at the Utica-Rome Speedway, Marsden picked up his series during the first visit to UR , with Mannise, Hawker, Phil Norman, and Mike Schultz. Hawker has the chance to win an extra $800 bonus if he wins this event, collecting the back to back bonus if he is victorious.
Defending 358-Modified champion Stewart Friesen have both set themselves as the favorites to win the $8,000 track title with both collecting win apiece so far this season. Willy Decker, Paul Jensen, Mitch Gibbs, Bobby Varin, Paul Kinney, AJ Romano, Gus Schmidt, and Jim Davis are just some of the drivers looking to add their name the 2008 win list and put themselves in contention for the lucrative track title.
In the Sportsman division, Mike Button reeled off two wins in the first two weeks of racing, with Casey Williams nabbing the win in the other night of competition. Brad Alger has three second place finishes to his credit in the three events run. Tim Nye, Matt Janczuk, Jim Rothwell, Jason Rood, Jeff Leslie, Jack Miller, Steve Way , and Jeremy Vunk are also weekly competitors contending for the wins each week.
Tom Denton holds the early point lead in the Pro Stocks, with Bill Knapp and Jim Normoyle close behind. Shawn Frost and Bret Belden fill out the top five positions in the standings. Each week, there are nearly a dozen cars that could win in the very competitive division.
