Dale Planck Soars to Victory in Super Dirt Series Race at Cayuga County

Posted by National Editor  |  05/29/08

Weedsport, N.Y. - Dale Planck out of Cortland, N.Y., racing in his no.77x Kevlar powered Teo Pro Car, sponsored by RezXRacing/Grow it Hydroseeding mount landed in Victory Lane on Sunday night at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway.

Planck started the feature in the third starting position and at the drop of the green wasted no time moving into second place on the first lap over Chad Homan. The pole sitter, Justin Hears, took off with the early lead and held it until lap twenty-one when the “Plankinator”, Dale Planck moved up to the high side of turn for to gain the lead at the start/finish line.

Before the pass, Planck was using up most of the speedway changing from the low groove to the high groove to gain any advantage that he could to get by Haers.

“I was trying the outside, I basically was trying to race where he wasn’t in the beginning, and he was pushing his car a little bit harder than I was, early. I was just trying to save the car; I have been fast too many times the first 25-30 laps and end up lapped traffic by the end of the race. I was trying to keep the car under me in general and to see if possibly I would be in a situation that I have always been in and use the car too much early, and then I started getting looser coming off the corner.”

I asked Dale if he was watching the lap counter at all to see if he knew that Danny “The Doctor” Johnson was behind him.

“No radios or anything, they won’t tell me on the one-way if he was coming. (Joking around about not having radios) I saw Danny Johnson on the scoreboard, and anytime you see Danny Johnson, the first thing I was thinking is whoever is leading, they are a“sitting duck”; wait a minute, I was leading.(Laughing) He has done quite a few laps around this place.”

“I didn’t change much from the heat race to the feature, just the basic stuff that we have been changing the last few races. Tires were the key tonight for the victory; ultimately we do our homework on setups and stuff it comes down to the tires, they got to be good and not seal over and the motor helps too, it is a really smooth motor. The Kevlar powerplant under the hood helps, Kevlar has been a real good friend for years. We finally got a good package together with the new team. (Carey Terrance owned team) Everything is out of the same stable, the guys are the same that prepare the cars, and to be this successful, it doesn’t get any better than that. I would like to thank Kevlar for the power plant and Bobby Hearn of Teo Pro Car, Carey Terrance for the car and chance to drive. The whole crew, and family, there is too many to thank. You can’t do much in this sport with out a lot of backing, even if it isn’t financial backing. I’m looking forward to the Fulton SDS race, and over the years, this place (Cayuga County) and Rolling Wheels have been my two worst tracks, and I have a win now at both places. Hopefully we will keep the luck going for the next race at Fulton where I’m usually good.”

The “Doctor” Danny Johnson from Rochester N.Y. in a Troyer chassis no.27j finished in the third position and he put on one heck of a move to pass Justin Haers and Alan Johnson going into turn three.

“They got slowed up by lap traffic and I was able to maintain my momentum and I had some room up there(high side of the track) and there was still some bite up there, that helped me get by them. I didn’t do many changes from the heat to the feature. We are playing it day by day for now and see how it goes at Fulton Speedway for the next SDS race.”

Danny mentions that he is not sure yet weather or not he will be racing a late model on the seventh of June or racing the modified at Fulton.

“I am having fun with both of them (Modified and LateModel), I really don’t know myself, that is something that we still have to decide, we have to make that decision.”

Jimmy Phelps from Baldwinsville, N.Y. raced his way up from a tenth starting position and charged his way to a third place finish in the no. 98h Troyer chassis with a Finger Lakes powered machine.

“I think on a longer run, I felt better, the track slicked up so much, the yellows helped me get right upon there bumpers. I’m happy; the yellows helped me track position wise, my car seemed better on a long green. We are happy, I think this helps us going into Fulton, we have been knocking on the door every night(at Fulton) getting top fives , and going to my hometrack hopefully we will get the breaks and be there in the end.”

At the beginning of the show, Alan Johnson set fastest time in hot laps with a 17.604 sec lap while in time trials, Vic Coffey set fast time with a 17.492 lap while Chuck Bower set the second fastest time with a 17.512 lap. Alan ended up in fifth place in time trials. The track looked like it was going to be a slick and hard and most was thinking Alan Johnson would be a force to reckon with, as Alan usually runs smooth on tracks like this condition but faded from the fourth starting spot and finished in seventh place. By lap fifteen Alan was closing the gap and moving closer to Justin Hears and Dale Planck, but didn’t have what it takes to get them.

Following Planck, Danny Johnson and Jimmy Phelps was Tim Fuller and Justin Hears.

Heat wins went to Vic Coffey, Tim Fuller, Dale Planck, and Larry Wight. Billy Decker and Billy Dunn won the two consolation races to get into the show.

SIDE NOTES and QUOTES: The No.18 modified of Sean Beardsley wound up getting a right front flat on lap three sending him to the pits and putting him a lap down early.

“Everybody was getting jockeyed around there and there wasn’t enough room for my nose, I went over the jersey barrier, I did make it back out but got a lap down. I’m trying to do this SDS series and also the Late Model series and I have only ran four shows and have less than a hundred laps under my belt. I am not sure yet if I’ll be going to Fulton for the SDS show or go the Late Model series race, I’m a regular at Fulton and the team won’t know until like 5 minutes before we leave.”

Chad Homan out of Maceden N.Y. drew the outside pole for the feature event and he was excited about that.

“My 2003 Bicknell modified is working good, I am glad I am starting out front so that I can see, and I’m going to do my best when the green flag drops.”

Chad ended up finishing in fifteen position. Chad also mentions that he is just a low budget team and can’t really afford to put new tires on the car every time they go to the track, and is worried about the new softer compound tires that will be legal to use starting next week. Chad mentions that these new tires will most likely last for about 35 laps, and that he will have a hard time keeping up as he knows the“bigger” teams will have a new tire on every time they are out there. He told me the tires he had on wereabout 5-6 races old.

“I love the modified and I am having a lot of fun racing, and that is what it’s all about.”

After time trials, Chuck Bower in the no.99b Bicknell mount was seen changing carburetors on the car.

“The track is a bit slick out there and we are actually detuning the car a bit to give it less horsepower in hopes that this will help forward momentum.”

Vic Coffey who set fast time thought that the inversion for the heat races has definitely helped him. The pill that was drawn was zero, so no cars were inverted in the heat races. This put him on the polefor the first heat, which at the end he took the win.

Dale Planck mentioned “it is a good thing that we are all racing on the same track,” talking about how the track was slicked up. Apparently it seemed that he had it figured out.

Justin Haers who was the second to last person to drawin the redraw for the top 12 starting spots jokingly said to Shane Andrews (announcer) “I just don’t want to start on the pole, and ironically the hat that he chose was none other than just that, number 1.

Bill Clark took the win in the DIRTcar sportsman division while Wayne Ellison took the win in the UMPStreet Stock feature. The Midstate Vintage Modifieds were on hand and Mike Mclaughlin and Rich Applebeetook feature wins in the two features they contested.

Todd Town in the sportsman division took a wild ride going off the turn one jersey barrier where the car ended up on its roof and he was not injured and got out safely.

Overall, the night was jammed pack with great racing and the DIRTcar staff put on a great show and in a timely manner as well.
