Sharon Springs, NY- Bobby Varin Dealt A Pair Of Fives In Weekend Racing Action
by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Racing returned to the Fonda Fairgrounds last Saturday evening and Sharon Springs, New York Modified star Bobby Varin was anxious to slide back behind the belts after suffering from a weekend of rainouts the week prior. Varin, by luck of the draw, began his heat race starting from the pole position and easily ran off and raced away from the competition in posting the heat race win. Inverting the top three from each heat, Varin found himself starting the feature event from the 11th position. Real Estate at the famous fairgrounds racetrack was at a premium on this racing night as veterans Pat Ward and defending track Champion Matt DeLorenzo worked their way towards the front quickly waged a two man battle for the number one spot. Ward took over the lead on lap-11 while DeLorenzo slipped into second on lap-12 setting the stage for a battle royal to the finish. Lapped traffic came into play early as Ward began to encounter it by lap-16. Varin at this time was still moving forward but having a bit of difficulty finding the topside to his liking and was utilizing the bottom side of the raceway to make most of his moves forward. Lap after lap clicked off and Ward and DeLorenzo continued their battle with Ward holding off the dtermined track champion with each passing lap.
Ward held on to the lead until lap-33 when DeLorenzo used a pic with the lapped car of Donnie Corellis to momentarily trap Ward and darted around him to take control of the lead. Once in front, DeLorenzo used the full powers of his Enders small block motor to drive to a comfortable distance for the win and winning $4,000.00 in the process. Ward continued his great work in 2008 with a solid runner-up finish and Dave Camara finished in third place. Outside invader Brett Hearn made a rare apperance at Fonda and captured fourth place in the Knoth-Hastings number 74 Middletown ride and Varin finally settled for fifth place at race end piloting the familiar Nancy and Jake Spraker 1J machine.
The following night at the Utica Rome Speedway, Bobby Varin found a fifth place finish being the best he could do as the "Canadian Sensation" and defending track champion Stewart Friesen dominated the action in winning his second feature event of the new racing season. Varin started the race deep in the pack and found his way into second by the midway point of the race but the car began to develop some problems that found him losing some power as the race wore on. At the end of the race Varin had slipped back to fifth with Friesen in for the win, Paul Kiney finishing in the runner-up role, Pat Ward in third, pole-sitting Andy Bachetti in fourth and Varin completing the top five.
Danny Varin continued his fine work with the Ed Monger owned Magsarus number 93 at Fonda. While he didn't transfer from his heat after starting in the final position, the Modifed Rookie drove to a sixth place finish and the finish would allow him to begin the Consi from outside of the starting row. Danny wasted no time in powering into the lead at the drop of the green flag and captured his first win in Big Block competition at the speedway. The teenager began the feature event from 22nd starting position and took his time in working his way forward on the slick race track. Danny crossed the checkered flags in 14th position at the end of the race and received many plaudits from the Fonda faithful who follow the weekly action closely.
Danny remains on the sidelines at Utica Rome as the Chuck Tibbits team awaits the new powerplant for the race car. It is hoped the team will be ready to go racing soon.
Overall, it was a fairly decent weekend for the Varin family. With Bobby securing a pair of fifth place finishes, his confidence soars as he attempts to win two championships this year at both Fonda and Utica Rome.
For, his progress his progress in the Modified division has been a highlight of the racign season at Fonda. Showing much poise and a ton of maturity, the youngster has proven he was ready for the jump into the high powered Modfied racing wars. With more laps under his belt, the teenager should soon be challenging the veterans for a better share of the purse. Bobby Varin is doing his usual great job as he his a master craftsman when it comes to getting around the tricky Fonda layout. he is hoping the early wins help propel his hopes for a fourth title at Fonda. The Varin Family will return to action this week at both Fonda and Utica Rome.
Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support with their racing efforts and hope for continued support during the 2008 racing season.
