Change of Plans nets Poirier another win at Brockville
BROCKVILLE-Steve Poirier wasn't planning on one of his occasional visits to Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night. However, the weatherman directed the Quebec driver to show up at the fast quarter mile Beast of the East and sure enough Poirier took advantage of the situation winning the 20 lap Southern Ontario Sprints feature.
Poirier was scheduled to be running stateside on Saturday, but rain there proved to be a blessing. The versatile driver used a late race restart to blast past Warren Mahoney and grab the victory in the first ever appearance at the Brockville Ontario Speedway by the Southern Ontario Sprints. The race was red flagged after a spectacular crash in turn one that sent Brian McDonald barell rolling into the infield. McDonald virtually destroyed his 151 sprinter but showed some real moxy in getting behind the wheel of his regular Modified later in the night. The incident also claimed local favourite Rick Wilson.
It looked for awhile, that another unscheduled guest would be the victor in the 30 lap 358 Modified event. Kyle Dingwall, however had other ideas. Dingwall waited patiently on the tail of 15 year old Larry Wight for the first half of the race. When Wight pushed high in a turn, that was all that the Brockville native needed as he took the lead and then held off a late challenge from defending track champ Danny O Brien for his first win of 2008. Wight settled for third in front of Bill Gill and McDonald.
The Sportsman 25 lap finale was survival of the fittest in the early going as there was caution flag after caution flag. Chris Raabe stayed clear of the carnage and picked up his second straight win, but not without a final two lap flurry from Randy Gaudet who was second. Cole Dingwall rallied from an early incident to finish third followed by Dylan Evoy and Brandon Sweet.
Steve Billings and Josh Kane continued their rolls in the Street Stock and Rookie classes respectively both making it 3 wins in 3 starts this season. Billings had to rally to catch and pass Dana Aikens in the 20 lap Street Stock event while Kane fended off his usual challenger Steve Barber for the win in the 16 lap Rookie final.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday night, June 7th with a full race program with the four regular divisions along with the Vintage Cars and a special 20 lap Enduro event. The green flag drops at 7pm.
