Airborne Speedway Recap Sat May 31
BRUNO RULES AIRBORNE MODS
Mike Bruno repeated as the Ernie’s Tools Modified winner and rookie Larry Underwood of Milton, VT scored an upset win in the J&S Sportsman 25-lap feature Saturday at Airborne Speedway.
Six laps into the 30-lap DIRTcar Modified main, Bruno sat fifth after starting tenth. He gained a position per lap before taking the lead from Craig Reyell on lap 10, and then drew out to a seven car-length lead. Martin Roy gained nine positions by the halfway mark and held off point-leader Patrick Dupree for second. Roy narrowed Bruno’s lead over the final 10 laps, but was unable to mount a serious threat to the Cricket’s Restaurant No. 22. George Foley finished fourth. Craig Reyell had his best run of the season to date to complete the top five. Aaron Bartemy rallied back from an early spin from contact to place sixth. Richard Tisseur, Francis McNeil, Matt Woodruff and Chris Cayea filled spots 8-10.
Underwood drove to his first career win from the pole. Brian Criss of Plattsburgh was a tight second, four feet off Underwood’s back bumper after managing to tuck in down low on the race’s only restart. Michael Wells hung on for third, just ahead of Chris Reeves and Shawn Duquette. “I was looking in the mirror a whole lot towards the end,” Underwood admitted with a grin. Positions 6-10 went to Robin Wood, Bucko Branham, Skip Liberty, Tylor Terry and Toby Ebersole.
Joe Daniels of West Chazy also recorded a career-first win in the Versatile Trailer Sales Renegade 25-lap feature. Daniels had finished second by inches in his heat, started on the outside pole and led every lap. Dave Rabtoy of Swanton, VT was second, five car-lengths back. Rick Hart, Mike Terry and Randy LaDue were 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
Defending NAPA Warrior champion Rick Doner of Ausable Forks won for the second week in a row after battling side by side with runner-up Chico Martineau for several laps. Tom Santillo of Peru was a close third. Eli Beshaw of Plattsburgh won the Monster Energy Drink Bomber feature besting Timmy Gadway and Randy Martin.
Chris Cayea, Aaron Bartemy and Martin Roy won the Modified heats. Rick Hart and Lonnie Rivers won the Renegade heats. Shawn Duquette and Brian Criss won Sportsman heats.
