Sharon Springs, NY- Bobby Varin Scores Top Five Finish At Utica Rome
by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media

With the Saturday night racing schedule at Fonda falling victim to the heavy rain falling throughout the state, Sharon Springs, New York Modified star Bobby Varin focused his attention to the Utica Rome Speedway and their regular Sunday night racing show. Varin started the feature event from the tenth position. Bottled up in a cluster of cars in the early stages of the race, Varin used his experience and his heavy right foot to slowly march his way forward during the running of the event. Varin reached the top five by the midway point of the race and then began having trouble making anymore headway forward and even lost a position or two while still being able to keep sight of the leaders, the action was that close upfront. Riding hard to keep pace, on lap-24 Stewart Friesen and Andy Bachetti made contact while challenging each other for the lead. Bachetti flew off the race course on turn4 and Friesen was sent to the rear for his part in the hard contact. The turn of events put Pat Ward out front and that was all the margin the veteran wheel twister would need as he raced his way to his second victory of the year at the speedway. Early leader Jamie Christian was in for the runnerup role, Mitch Gibbs rallied to finish third, Willy Decker was fourth and Varin worked overtime to recover for a top five finish. Friesen made a remarkable recovery to finish just out of the top ten in eleventh position and Bachetti settled for seventeenth in the final rundown.

With Varin securing another top five finish, his confidence is building as he works towards his goal of two championships this year at both Fonda and Utica Rome. Both tracks afford great racing and tough competition and to win a title at either of the facilities the driver has to be on his A-Game at all times. To win both titles in a single season, a great race team, some magic and good old-fashioned ladyluck must play a defining role as well. For Varin, to garner in a fourth title at his favorite track Fonda, it would rank him among the all-time favorites of the famed Montgomery County oval. Jack Johnson leads the parade in titles with ten followed by Dave Lape who has scored seven titles to his credit at Fonda. The legendary Bill Wimble won five championships and Lou Lazzaro and Harry Peek both have four titles to their credit. Varin is tied with a couple of driving legends, Pete Corey and Steve Danish who each scored three titles in their reign at Fonda and Mike Romano has also won three titles at Fonda. To date Varin has 35-career wins at Fonda and is currently ranked ninth in all-time wins at the speeedway that is highlighted by Jack Johnson's leading total of 148.

This week the Varin family will return to the Fonda Speedway for the Staurday night action and Bobby will again tackle Utica Rome on Sunday night. Bobby will slide behind the belts of the familiar Nancy and Jake Spraker numbered 1J Bicknell Chassis/JPM Powered machine as he hopes to add another notch to his racing resume. His son Danny will return to action aboard the Ed Monger owned Magarus sponsored numbered 93 as the oyungster sets his sights on winning the Rookie of the Year honors at the speedway in the Modified division. Bobby continues to steer the Dave Cruickshank owned Dover Brake Sponsored numbered 00 at Utica Rome.

Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support with their racing efforts and hope for continued support during the 2008 racing season.
