GOSHEN, NY-- Higbie Sails To Runnerup Finish At Accord Over The Weekend
By Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
"The Statesman From Slate Hill" Jerry Higbie enjoyed another great finish this past Friday night as he highsailed his signature numbered 97 to a runnerup finish at Gary Palmer's "Gem in the Catskills" Accord Speedway. The talented Higbie began the night by racing to a third place finish in his heat event. At the beginning of the Rhinebeck Ford Modified 30-lap feature Higbie began from inside of the fourth row of the talent laden field. At the start of the race the inside lane didn't move right away and Higbie found himself momentarily trapped before finding a channel to race through as he set sail on the leading John Lutes Jr and then Jerry Curry. Finding some racing room on the top side of the raceway, Higbie began a quick assault to the front. Lutes regained the lead from Curry on the restart on lap-11 and Higbie found his way into the runnerup spot one lap later.
With the track getting drier as the ground-pounders worked their magic to the delight of the large crowd on hand, Higbie found the topside going away and he dove the Mid-City Transit Rocketship down to the inside of the raceway. Rookie Modified talent David Bush was flexing his muscles while coming forward and found the outside to his liking with his small block car and found his way around Higbie and set sail for Lutes Jr. On lap-23 Bush executed his winning move around Lutes and drove his racer to victory, his first since joining the Modified ranks this season. Higbie made his move into second a lap later and remained as the runnerup in the hard fought event. Mike Ricci drove to a solid third in his return to Accord and Andy Bachetti rallied back to finish fourth. Jackie Brown Jr was fifth.
While the Higbie Racing Team had hoped to continue it's recent run of success the following evening at Orange County Fair Speedway, Mother Nature had other plans for the famous hard clay raceway. Heavy storm clouds and high winds rolled in and in what looked to be the start of a tornado. The rain began pummelling the vicinity and the track management had no choice but to cancel the show.
A test and tune session was held Wednesday evening at Orange County and Higbie's Big Block Team, The Shaver Racing Entry took part in the session. Higbie, who is still seeking his first win in the Big Block action at OCFS, felt the session would be helpful as the team pulls out all stops to chase for the Championship in 2008.
This week will find the Higbie Racing Team once again heading to Accord for the Friday action and then back to Orange County Fair Speedway for the weekly Saturday night racing action. Higbie is hoping for another solid weekend of racing to keep pace with the top racers in the divisions he is racing.
Higbie's aggressive 2008 racing schedule will find him in the thick of the action as he prepares for his runs at the Accord Speedway and Orange County Fair Speedway Championships this year. He will also be challenging for the ROC title. For the Accord and ROC events, Higbie will race his signature numbered 97 cars and for his assault on OCFS and select WRG Series Races, Higbie will once again strap himself into the Team Shaver numbered 47 equipment as the Shaver Team will have two Big Block cars for Higbie to steer. Sponsorship for the Teams comes from a great group of loyal sponsors who have supported Higbie throughout his successful racing career. Mid-City Transit, Mr K's Carpet Service, Behrent's Speed Center, SKJ Towing and BadaBing Pizza have all lent their support to the 97 cars, and Beaverkill Trout Hatchery, Superior Building Supply and Woodburne Lawn & Garden lend their support to the Shaver Team. In addition to his Big Block rides, Higbie will be slipping behind the belts of the Affordable Transmission numbered 17 for a run at the 358 Small Block title at OCFS.
Jerry Higbie Racing would like to thank the entire racing community for their support and well wishes as the team prepares for a great season in racing this year.
