Mark Hitchcock wins the 30-lap feature race at Cornwall Motor Speedway
Cornwall, On – Sunday, June 8, 2008 – Martin Bélanger – It was bumper and sticker night at Cornwall Motor Speedway on a hot and humid night for racing as all the classes had a complete race program plus the fans were able to go and meet their favourite drivers during intermission time on Jim`s Performance Plus night.
In the 30-lap modified feature, Mark Smoke led the first lap but 4 cars got tangled in turn 2 and the yellow was out. Gage Morin got a good jump on the restart and took the lead over Smoke, after 8 laps, Laurent Ladouceur was now in second spot but he got together with Mark Smoke and Roy Delormier on lap 10 and this brought the second caution. Morin got another good restart followed by Mitch Jock but Morin got too high and Jock passed him for the lead on lap 12. Jock was moving away at the halfway point followed by Morin and Hitchcock. Morin spun out in turn 3 and this led to the yellow on lap 19; he was second at this time. Jock leads the way on the next green but Hitchcock make an inside move in turn 2 on lap 20 and he is the new leader as another yellow came out on lap 22. Hitchcock got a good start on the start and led for two laps when Perry Francis and Clayton Benedict got together and Benedict was in the wall in turn 3 on lap 24. Hitchcock led the way over Jock and Kyle Dingwall in third, Jock followed Hitchcock closely with 2 to go and Dingwall was able to take the second spot on Jock. Hitchcock led the final laps to win the feature race over Dingwall, Mitch Jock, Laurent Ladouceur and Stéphane Lafrance. Jock, Brian McDonald and Roy Delormier won the qualifying heats
Stéphane Lebrun and Steve Johnston led the 20-lap Pro-Stock field as Lebrun took the lead with Dion Oakes in third. The yellow came out on lap 2 when a few cars stopped in turn 3. Lebrun sets the pace but has company with Ghyslain Valade and Rock Aubin with 5 laps in. Aubin was now in second when Valade went too high. Aubin was now on the back bumper of Lebrun at the halfway point. Gilles Godard was now in the mix and he powers by Aubin for second. Godard was now the new leader as pass by Lebrun in turn 2 on lap 13. Aubin passed Lebrun and he stopped in turn 3. Godard has a good restart over Valade and led the final laps to win his second feature of the year over Rock Aubin, Valade, Oakes and Louie Jackson completes the top 5. Joey Ladouceur and Lebrun won the heat races.
In the 15-lap Semi-Pro feature, Stéphane Carrière was the early leader with Kurtis McPhee in second as Derek Cryderman was now in third spot after 3 laps done when the caution comes out. Carrière was still the leader with Cryderman now in second as Marc Lalonde now in fourth as Sébastien Bazinet brought the second caution on lap 6. Cryderman jumps in the lead on the restart with Marc Lalonde in second as Carrière went into the infield and lost many positions. Crydermand and Lalonde were now in lapped traffic with 3 laps to go when Bazinet spun out. Cryderman got a good start with Lalonde close to him but Cryderman led the final laps to win the feature race over Lalonde, Kurtis McPhee, Kevin Jodoin and Michel Desjardins. Stéphane Carrière and Kevin Jodoin were the winners in the qualifiers
The best field of the year for the 12-lap rookie feature race as Mike Gaucher took the early lead followed by Jesse Thompson and Andrew Russell in third spot. Jean-Marc Larose made a great move to grab the second spot with Pierre Robidoux now in third. Robidoux and Larose were swapping the second place on lap 7 but Larose was able to keep his spot. Gaucher got into traffic with two to go and on the last lap the top 3 went 4-wide in turn 2 and Gaucher was able to stay in front the win the feature race in front of Jean-Marc Larose and Marc Usereau. Andrew Russell and Jean-Marc Larose had won the heats.
A great night of racing in all categories, the track was really fast in all races. Do not miss next week`s show as it will be fan appreciation night, only 4$ to get in and also the biggest show of the year in two weeks, the Triple Crown of Racing with the World of Outlaws, Empire Super Sprints and Modifieds on the same night.
