Weedsport, NY June 8, 2008 By Dan Kapuscinski, Canandaigua Speedway PR and Promotions Coordinator
For the second consecutive race weekend at Canandaigua Speedway, Steve Gray took his no. 29g DIRTcar Sportsman Modified to victory lane. Gray outraced Dan Wiesner and then Gary Hoteling to the finish line for the win on A-Verdi Open Wheel Showdown Night at the Races presented by HEP Sales.
Gray started in 16th position and passed Wiesner down low on lap-13 setting sail to victory. Wiesner ran second for the majority of the event before faltering on the last circuit falling to 8th in the rundown.
That was great racing Wiesner for the win, said Gray in victory lane. It really was a lot of fun out there tonight. The bottom was the shortest way around, and it seemed to work out for us tonight. We just seem to have this thing figured out lately.
Hoteling, Nick Guererri, Kevin Ridley, and Anthony Rizzardo rounded out the top five finishers.
Like Gray, Bubba Burnell returned to Canandaigua Speedway victory lane for the second consecutive event. Blane Smith, Andy Fisk, Burnell, and Adam Depuy waged a tremendous battle for the lead for much of the 20-lap affair which saw zero caution flags.
Burnell took the top spot from Fisk and Smith on the 13th circuit, and managed to hold off everyone elses efforts to take the win.
I really dont know what to say, said Burnell. That was a great race out there. You are running against the best in the business out here every week.
Fisk, Depuy, Smith, and Chris Fisher complete the top five in the rundown.
The 12-lap PureStox main event saw a tight race between Eric Chapman and Chris Guererri. Chapman and Guererri swapped the lead two different times, with Chapman getting the upper hand after Guererri picked up a flat right rear tire with 1-lap to go while leading. Marc Minutolo, Corey Hunt, Ted Sweeney, and George LaVare Jr. finished the fast five.
Next Saturday night its Advanced Lubrication/WACK 1420am Night at the Races with the return of the DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds. The DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds, UMP Street Stocks, PureStox, and Midstate Vintage Modifieds will also be on hand with racing starting at 7pm.
