Friesen, Currier Claim Sportsman Twins at Cayuga County!

Weedsport, NY – June 8, 2008 – By Dan Kapuscinski, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR and Promotions Coordinator

James Friesen and Tim Currier are no strangers to DIRTcar Sportsman Modified victory lane. However, neither had won a main event at the famed Cayuga County Fair Speedway. By the end of Town Mechanical/Taylor Rental Night at the Races, each would add their name to the coveted Weedsport oval win list.

Friesen claimed victory in Twin 20 Feature number one, edging AJ Kingsley to the line for the victory. Friesen used the extreme high line to take the win on the final circuit.

Currier out hustled Steve Gray and Dave Marcuccilli to the line for the win in Twin number two. The Currier Plastics no. 10 has knocked on the door several times at Cayuga County Fair Speedway and finally managed to bring one home.

Adam Depuy took the checkered flag in the first leg of the Parts Plus Big 6 Street Stock Series, while Doug Williams won the ESDCA Mod Lite main event, and Nick Werner took home the BattleKarz feature win.

DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Twin 20 Feature number one saw Kingsley and Friesen start from row one. Kingsley would jump out to the early lead in the no. 3k riding the low side of the Speedway . Friesen dogged Kingsley from the start, and used the high lane to his advantage.

The race’s only caution came out on lap-11 for Daryl Hilkert as he tagged the inside retaining wall in turn two tearing off his left front wheel. On the restart Kingsley led Friesen, Jim Spano, Tom Juhl, and Mike Entwistle.

When the cars got back under way it was clear that Kingsley and Friesen were the class of the field. Kingsley tried to hang on but Friesen proved that the outside lane was the place to be, sneaking past Kinglsey at the line for the win. The main event victory was Friesen’s first career triumph at the Weedsport oval.

“The car ran great tonight,” said Friesen. “The outside lane was really working and I just kept using it.”

Kingsley, Juhl, Kevin Ridley, Spano, Gray, Jeremy Pitcher, Entwistle, Marcuccilli, and Currier completed the top ten.

The second Twin 20 feature saw another classic battle to the wire. This time it involved three different speedsters.

Currier, Marcuccilli, and Gray found themselves tangled in a three way battle for the lead in the closing stages of the event. Currier used the outside lane, while Marcuccilli pedaled his no. m1 machine on the bottom side of the Speedway .

As those two drivers battled it allowed Canandaigua Speedway feature winner, Gray, to come into the fight. Maruccilli looked as though he may have Currier’s number on the low side until they came up on the lapped machine of Rob Richmond. Richmond blocked the low lane, forcing Marcuccilli to move up and allowing Currier to breeze on to victory.

“It’s great to be in victory lane here,” said Currier. “I got really sick last night, but the guys got the car together and it was really good tonight. The top was working really well, I liked the bottom but I knew the lapped cars would be down there so I had to stay up high.”

Marcuccilli, Gray, Ridley, Pitcher, Entwistle, Juhl, Kingsley, Hilkert, and Friesen complete the top ten runners.

The opening round of the UMP Street Stocks Parts Plus Big 6 Series was a barn burner, with Wayne Ellison and Bubba Burnell bringing the field to the green. Burnell staked his claim early on as the leader with Ellison, Andy Fisk, Dave Mannise, and Adam Depuy in tow.

On lap-4 though, the no. 33 of Fisk lost the handle in turn two, dropping him from the top five. Burnell led Ellison, Mannise, Depuy, and Chris Fisher to the line for the restart.

After the restart Depuy began to make his charge. The no. 99 went high around Mannise in turn two on lap-7, and then low on Ellison in turn four for second on lap-10. By the 12th circuit Depuy had closed right in on the back bumper of race leader Burnell.

Coming out of turn two on that same lap Depuy powered to the inside of Burnell to take the top spot. With just 5-laps to go Depuy led Burnell, Ellison, Mannise, Nick Rizzo, and Fisher.

However, on lap-17 the Rizzo no. 115 machine went up in a cloud of smoke and flames down the back straight. Rizzo dove out of his machine in the infield as track safety workers put out the blaze.

As the cars restarted with 3-laps to go Depuy charged on to victory. Behind the no. 99 was a flurry of activity. On the last circuit Burnell went way high in turn three giving up two positions, at the same time the no. 41 of Daryl Krebs took advantage going from fifth to second in the final three laps.

“You really have to bring your A-game here to Cayuga County ,” said Depuy. “I tried the top a couple times, but there was a lot of moisture on the bottom. That is where the car worked the best tonight.”

Krebs, Ellison, Burnell, Mannise, Dave Pope, Mike Welch, Fisher, Jim Wallace, and Dan Hoffman Sr. rounded out the top ten. Depuy will be the Parts Plus Big 6 point leader when the series returns to action Thursday, July 3rd at Rolling Wheels Raceway.

The ESDCA Mod Lite feature event was dominated by Doug Williams driving the no. 2. Williams started from outside row number one and was never again headed. Lowell Zehr mounted a nice charge through the field, passing Joe Gwilt with just three laps remaining for the runner up position, but had nothing for Williams.

“I wish we could come here every Sunday night,” said Williams. “This track is always fast and beautiful. The car worked great tonight, we had a rough night Friday night, but we worked hard and it paid off.”

Zehr, Gwilt, and Rocco Leone finished the top five. Ken Gamlen, Andrew Schartner, Jason Broedel, Ricky Donovan, and Ricky Yelle Jr. completed the top ten.

In the Pick-n-Pull BattleKarz division it was Nick Werner out running Barb Amadon and Skip Degroff for the win. Amadon led much of the 25-lap affair before Werner found the lane he needed to get by for the victory.

Next Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway its Dig Safely Fan Foto Night presented by We Care Holdings. Be sure to come to the Speedway and get your picture taken with your favorite driver. The DIRTcar Big-Block Mods return with the DIRTcar Sportsman, UMP Street Stocks, and BattleKarz taking the green at 7pm.
