MOD LITES AND VINTAGE CARS JOIN REGULAR PROGRAM ON BROEDEL ENERGY NIGHT

VERNON , NY- As the month of June marches on, the racing action at the Utica-Rome Speedway continues to heat up with great racing each and every week. This coming Sunday evening, the usual staple of 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks will be joined by the Empire State Dwarf Car Association (ESDCA) Mod Lites and the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club. Broedel Energy will present the nights activities, with gates for this exciting night of fast paced entertainment opening at 3 p.m. with racing going off at 5:30 p.m.

Pat Ward and 2007 358-Modified track champion Stewart Friesen are locked in a furious battle for the 2008 title, worth $8,000 to the champion. 2005 and 2006 title holder Willy Decker currently sits in a close third with Paul Kinney and Mitch Gibbs filling out the top five positions. Bobby Varin, Paul Jensen, AJ Romano, Gus Schmidt, and Jamie Christian are the rest of the top 10, looking to crack into the top five positions. In point competition, Ward and Friesen have each collected two wins each in regular Sunday night action.

Brad Alger leads the way in the Sportsman with Matt Janczuk, Jason Rood, Tim Nye, and Steve Way trailing. Alger started the season with three consecutive second place finishes before grabbing the next two point events.

In the Pro Stock division, Jim Normoyle holds a slim edge over Tom Denton in the season long point standings, with Bret Belden, Mark Effner, and Bill Knapp trailing. Five different drivers have seen victory lane as of June 1, including Normoyle, Denton , Belden, Effner, and Shawn Frost.

Multi-time Pure Stock champion Russ Marsden is starting to heat up, with two consecutive wins, but he still trails Chris Carr in the standings. Phil Norman, Frank Hyatt, and Waylan Wilczek round out the top five in the standings. Marsden sits atop the win list with three wins while Ron Hawker and Tim Janczuk each have one apiece.

Using the smaller inner oval, the ESDCA Mod Lites will make their first of three visits of the season. Running weekly at the Brewerton Speedway and at special stops at other area speedways, the Mod Lites have grown in popularity in the area. Powered by motorcycle engines and looking like smaller versions of the Modifieds, the Mod Lites will use every bit of the speedway as they battle for the win.

The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club will also see action, bringing back memories for many of the older race fans as they put on a racing display in the cars of yesterday. Many are painted replicas of the heroes of the past, and will give the younger generation a glimpse of how the race cars have progressed through the years.

Utica-Rome Speedway is located on Route 5 in the village of Vernon , just minutes from the New York State Thruway. For more information, please log on to www.uticaromespeedway.com or call the speedway office at (315) 829-4557
