Curt VanPelt Holds Off the Bounty Hunters at Woodhull; Ray Smith Wins First Ever Crate Sportsman Feature

Woodhull, NY… A huge crowd packed Woodhull Raceway Saturday night on Fireman’s Appreciation night, sponsored by Brico Technologies and Colden Enterprises night. The fans were treated to a show featuring 136 cars representing Woodhull’s regular six divisions.
Curt VanPelt took advantage of a third place starting spot to even the score with brother Billy and pick up his second feature win of the 2008 season. By virtue of his victory, Curt kept Vern Wasson’s bounty on the VanPelt brothers alive and well for another week. Pole sitter Stacy Jackson jumped to an early lead, but soon had Curt trailing close behind. An early race caution lined the pair up side by side on the restart and Curt won the drag race at the drop of the green flag. Jackson’s hold on the runner up spot was short lived, as veteran Ron White powered by as Curt lengthened his lead to six car lengths. By this time, Curt’s brother, Billy VanPelt, had methodically worked his way around the high side of the high banks, running eighth and closing fast. As Curt and White began encountering heavy lap traffic, Frank Dunning moved up to the third spot and Billy VanPelt continued his charge by passing Jackson for fourth. From this point, Curt VanPelt relied on his years of experience at Woodhull to slice through lap traffic and open up his lead over White by more than 10 car lengths. At the drop of the checkers, Curt cruised home easily with the win over the distant machine of White. Frank Dunning was able to fend off the charging Billy Van pelt for third, with Jackson holding on for fifth.
Ray Smith and Dave Yehl paced the S&W Awards Crate Sportsman feature to the green, with Smith getting the edge at the drop of the green flag. Former feature winner Art Goodier bolted from his 4th place starting spot to lock on for third while AJ Costly took his machine to the extreme high side of the speedway in fourth. Smith planted his #12 machine solidly in the middle of the race track as Goodier muscled by Yehl for 2nd. The three cars stayed bunched up throughout the entire race, and Yehl eventually got back around Goodier for the runner-up position. The handling on Smith’s car appeared to fade a bit late in the race; buy Yehl couldn’t get the run he needed to claim the top spot. At the finish line it was Smith garnishing his first-ever feature win, with Yehl holding Goodier back for second. Perhaps the run of the night was turned in by Donnie Lawson. Lawson had to use a qualifying spot from the consolation race just to make the main event. Lawson showed his years of open wheel expertise as he sliced his way through the field to gather up a fourth place finish. Defending co-champion Bill Brewer logged in a solid top five by claiming fifth.
Wayne Robertson took another step towards turning his 2008 luck around by motoring to his second win of the season. Robertson had suffered multiple mechanical woes the first few weeks of the year, but boosted his chances of defending his 2007 track title by holding back a charging Bob Buono for the feature win. It was Buono’s best run so far this year at the high banks, besting Mikey Wonderling for the second spot. Mike Smith, piloting for car owner Chuck McGregor, held back former champion Glenn Whritenour for fourth, despite Whritenour’s constant attempts to nose under Smith’s #1 machine.
The Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks put on another nail-biter as the closing laps saw three-wide action for the top spot. Jared Hill claimed the lead early, but it didn’t take long for Zack Sutton and former two-time champion Danny Gordon to stake claims on his real estate. The trio had the crowd on their feet as they ran numerous laps two and three wide, with a charging Brian Knowles closely in tow. In the end, Gordon showed his championship form as he out-muscled Sutton for the win, with Hill a very close third. Knowles crossed the line in fourth, with Cliff Moss rounding out the top five.
Ted Morseman Jr. continued his dominance in the Sighs Plus Mini Stock division, collecting his third feature win of the year. Veteran Brian Grant Sr. made a big push through the pack to wheel his replica police cruiser home for second. Jason Ketrow ran up front the entire race and earned a fine third place finish. Veteran Ed Mills continued his consistency with another top five finish, placing fourth. Tracy Dunn held off former feature winner Rich Sharpsteen III for fifth.
In the LaBarron Brothers Front Wheel Drive division, Gary Baker racked up his second win in 2008 over teammate Mark Schenk. Rookie John Heidrick had another impressive run, holding off 2007 track champion Ron Daily Jr. for third. Tom McGlynn bounced back from a bad night last week to best pole-sitter Cody Baker for fifth.
