TIGHT POINT RACES AT ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY

Higbie Leads Both Modified Divisions



MIDDLETOWN, NY (June 11)……..As the wea the r heats up, so have the Orange County Fair Speedway point races. This is especially true in the two Modified divisions, where Slate Hill , New York ’s Jerry Higbie tops both listings. But barely! In the big-block Modified class, Higbie, who has never won this division’s track champion-ship, has a one-point advantage over David Van Horn (Harmony, New Jersey ). Four-time champion Chuck McKee ( Middletown ) is just three points back, with defending track titlist Jeff Heotzler ( Wallkill , New York ) in fourth, 23 points behind.



It’s not quite as close in the small-block 358 Modified class. There Higbie, a two-time champion in this division, has a four-point cushion over Tim Hindley ( Monticello , New York ). Craig Mitchell ( Wappingers Falls , New York ) is 34 points back, with David Van Horn and McKee 36 points behind.



In the Sportsman division, Mike Ruggiero ( Walden , New York ) has a relatively comfortable 27 point lead over Kevin Ward ( Hyde Park , New York ), who in turn holds a 35-point edge over Rich Coons ( Montgomery , New York ), the 2007 Sportsman champion. Interestingly, Ward and Ruggiero ended the 2007 season tied for second- place behind Coons.



Orange County has two full-fendered racing divisions. Mike Dutka ( Gardiner , New York ) tops the Pro Stock ranks, with Scott Kehr ( Hillsdale , New Jersey ) ten points back, and Rob Rowe (Walden) a distant 34 points behind. Tim McCarthy ( Redding , Connecticut ) leads the Veteran Pure Stock class by ten points over Emerson Cargain Sr. ( Mahopac , New York ), while in the less-experienced Amateur Pure Stockers, Joel Murns ( Middletown ) has a six-point edge over Willie Lenci (Congers, New York ).



This Saturday, June 14, Diamond Hart, Harmony Sand & Gravel, and Fox 96.7/103.1 present the exciting five division racing program.



And the n on Saturday, June 21, get ready for ano the r session of Smash and Crash. In addition to four divisions of racing ( the 358 Modifieds get the week off), the night closes with a Chet’s Garage Demolition Derby. Howard Johnson of Middletown and Tire King are the evening’s proud sponsors.



Closing out the month, on Saturday, June 28, all five racing divisions return for a full night of speedway excitement sponsored by Hig Fabrications, the Jerry Higbie Fan Club, and Graphic Center . With the midpoint of the season just around the corner, the track point races are expected to be even closely contested as drivers in all five classes will be out to get to the top of the leader boards in the ir respective divisions.



General admission for the five division race meets and the demolition derby night is $17.00. (Two-dollar discount coupons for the June race meets have been distributed throughout the area.) Seniors age 60 and up and students 13-17 get $2.00 off General Admission tickets. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Parking on the Fairgrounds remains free. Racing begins promptly at 6:00 PM.



Ticket prices in the unique Drive-In area are the same as General Admission, plus $1.00 for parking. The parking fee goes towards the Orange County Fair Speedway Drivers’ Point Fund.
