For Immediate Release - June 11, 2008 From Jim Irvine - Merrittville Public Relations - 905-892-8266
Thorold, Ontario (June 11) Race Fans and CAW Local 199 Members can look forward to a Big night of DIRT-sanctioned excitement at Merrittville Speedway as SMS Machine presents a return engagement of the New York Modified Midgets Saturday June 14th.
Joining the show will be the L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modifieds, the Hoosier Stocks, the Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lites and a visit from our Tuesday Night Kart Club.
The Original Pizza Logs Sportsmen will be at Genesee Speedway in Batavia NY competing in the opening round of the Lucas Oil Shoot Out presented by Dirt Track Digest.com. Merrittville Speedway will attempt to provide live updates throughout the night as the heats and features unfold.
Last season, the New York Modified Midgets made their first ever visit as part of the Friday Night portion of the J&S Heating Tripleheader. After a brief rain delay – they were the first feature out and quickly set lap times comparable to the 358 Modifieds.
In on their closest races of 2007, teenager Zach Morgan beat Jim Lafler for the win. In 2008, their current point race is just as close as Lafler leads Zach’s dad Timex by just two points going into a Brewerton Speedway double point event the night before the trip to Thorold .
New York's first pure 600cc Modified Midget Series touring series features drivers ranging in age from 14 years old to senior citizens.
A type of sprint car, the steel framed machines use motorcycle engine – just like the Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lites only half the size – limited to 600 to 637 c.c but able to reach over 110MPH at some races.
When Saturday night Race Fans look through the Dirt Weekly Racing Series Stock Car Roster you will see names such as Lampman, Miller, Wood, Bicknell, D’Ilario, Chevalier, Williamson, Klager, Tallman, Mastroianni, Leslie, Bleich, McPherson, Willard, Bowman, Braun, Robbins, Wutzke, Pierce and Small.
All of the above and others before them all got their racing starts in karts and while some of the older drivers may not have raced at Merrittville … the younger up and coming drivers all did.
On any Tuesday Night from May to September the infield track comes alive with drivers as young as 6 years old competing through 5 divisions and many of them are second, third and even fourth generation drivers.
When the gates open at 5:30, there will be a number of the racing karts on display and the drivers will be with them. Make sure you stop by and talk to them and inquire about their racing programs. Who knows … maybe in a few years you may see them on a Saturday Night!
Merrittville Speedway’s Tuesday night Kart Club would like to thank it’s many sponsors – PartSource, Drummond Home Hardware, Garden City Auto Complex, RCM Racing Equipment, Cassell Manufacturing, Ed MacPherson Construction, KC Auto Parts, Superior PetroFuels, Philbrick Farm & Garden Equipment, Original Pizza Logs, Burris Tire, Performance Manufacturing, Bicknell Racing Products, Slack Performance Karts and Hoosier Tire Canada.
