KUTZTOWN, PA - An up-and-coming star and a veteran swept Wednesday night's RTS Chassis-sponsored 270cc Micro-Sprint Twin 15s at The Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway.
Trevor Kobylarz, just 15 years old, won the first 15-lapper, while Micro steady Ed Kenderdine triumphed in the nightcap.
Brett Smith, meanwhile, drove to his first 600cc Micro-Sprint victory of 2008 at the one-fifth-mile clay oval.
In the first event, Kobylarz - son of former ARDC Midget driving champion Brian - took the top spot on the opening lap and fended off the advances of Delaware's Cameron Merriman for the first 12 circuits.
Racing toward the two-to-go signal, Merriman clipped an inside tire and momentarily broke loose, allowing eighth-starter Ross Perchak to take over second, where he finished.
Birdsboro, Pa.'s Kobylarz, a Slingshot graduate, powered on to his first career win.
Marty Gorr, Merriman and Jonathan Pepe completed the front five.
A 12-car invert was determined by a fan draw for the second 15-lapper.
Kenderdine, starting third, vaulted into the lead on the first lap with his No. 9 and was never seriously challenged over the remainder of the distance. The final nine circuits ran caution-free.
RTS Chassis proprietor Terry Schaeffer took over second on lap six and chased Kenderdine to the finish, followed by Billy Murphy, Merriman and Eric Bodine.
Heat winners in 270cc action were Brandon Edgar, Sam Lamothe, Tim Buckwalter and Merriman. Schaeffer and Murphy split the consolations.
Brett Smith virtually dominated the 20-lap 600cc Micro-Sprint headliner. A winner at Kutztown in '07, Smith worked the high line craftily into the lead on a lap-four restart, completing a pass of Doug Snyder.
Once in front, Smith (Gilbert, Pa.) jetted away to victory.
Snyder came home second, followed by Brian Carber, seventh-starter Brock Bilger and Shane Lewis.
Jason Van Doren and 358-Modified racer Doug Manmiller were 600cc heat winners.
Kurt Bettler launched off the outside pole in the 20-lap Slingshot feature and never looked back. Michael Glass drove from sixth to place second. Opening Night winner Bill Weaver, Shannon Smith (up from ninth) and Travis Bieber filled out the front five.
Weaver and Matt Carman split the Slingshot prelims.
Dan Souder dominated the 15-lap Young Gun 390 feature.
Racing continues at Kutztown on Wed., June 18 with the XCel 600 Modifieds making their first '08 appearance, plus a full program of 270cc Micro-Sprints, 600cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots. A special PA 358-Modified Shootout will be held, as well.
Gates open at 4 p.m., with warm-ups at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.
