by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media

The Fonda Fairgrounds returned to action last Saturday night and New York Modified star Bobby Varin was in the thick of the battle as the 2008 racing season has included some great racing between the crazy weather that has been plaguing race tracks across the country. Bobby Varin began the Saturday night racing action by starting scratch in his heat race but found some racing real estate top and bottom to work his way to a heat race win. Starting in the 12th position for the 30-lap feature event, Varin kept his attention focused at defending champion Matt DeLorenzo who was starting from 10th. While the field was congested early on in the battle, both DeLorenzo and Bobby Varin were finding the creases in the talented field to race to the front. DeLorenzo was fourth by lap-7 while Boby Varin was racing for 7th with his son Danny. On lap-10 DeLorenzo found his way into the lead while Varin was still trying to shake free to challenge. Once in front DeLorenzo wasted no time in jumping out to a sizeable advantage over the rest of the field.

Bobby Varin made it to third place by lap-15 and moved into the runner-up slot a few laps later but the feature event went non-stop and DeLorenzo was on his usual A-game to go on and win the feature event. Bobby Varin came across the line for second in a great run and Ryan Odasz was third. Ronnie Johnson and early leader Paul Cirincione rounded out the top five . Danny Varin, who finished his heat race in second place, began his feature run from the fifth starting position. Truly showing his quick maturity into the Modified ranks, the talented Rookie pilot held his own early in the running and continued to impress the onlookers with his smooth style of driving. When the checkered flag fell, the 17-year old driver had scored his first top ten finish of the 2008 racing season with a solid run in eighth place.

Bobby Varin moved over to Utica Rome for the Sunday night action at the speedway. Starting deep in the field, Varin went top side early on and found some racing room to move forward. A lap-9 restart bunched the field but on the restart many positions began to change quickly. Varin, still moving forward, was now challenging for the lead. Varin took over the lead on lap-15 and appeared to be in control of the event. A lap-27 caution bunched the field for the final time but on the restart Varin slipped up high on the banking and opened the door for many cars to race underneath. Willy Decker became the new leader and led the final couple of laps to emerge as the winner of the feature event. Pat Ward raced to second with Stewart Friesen settling for third. Paul Jensen was fourth, Paul Kinney was fifth and Varin was sixth in the final rundown.

This coming week the Varin family will return to the Fonda Speedway for the Saturday night racing action and Bobby will again tackle Utica Rome on Sunday night. Bobby will slide behind the belts of the familiar Nancy and Jake Spraker numbered 1J Bicknell Chassis/JPM Powered machine as he hopes to add another notch to his racing resume. His son Danny will return to action aboard the Ed Monger owned Magarus sponsored numbered 93 as the youngster sets his sights on winning the Rookie of the Year honors at the speedway in the Modified division. Bobby continues to steer the Dave Cruickshank owned Dover Brake Sponsored numbered 00 at Utica Rome.

It is hoped the long awaited powerplant for the Chuck Tibbitts owned number-18 will soon be ready for the racing action at Utica Rome, giving Danny two nights of racing as well.

Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support with their racing efforts and hope for continued support during the 2008 racing season. More updates will follow for the Varin Racing team efforts.
