Susquehanna, PA…The large crowd in attendance was rewarded with a thrilling modified feature event when Susquehanna’s own Darwin Greene held off all challengers and won his first ever feature race. Greene’s win did not come easily as he had to hold off the late race charge of last week’s feature winner, Bobby Trapper of Scranton . Dan Stone used his favorite outside groove to back up last week’s win with his second of the season in the late model division. In the sportsman class, Joey Colsten got his first win of the year while Jim Sykes became another first time victor in the super stock division. Rich Green beat his brother Butch to the line to win in the pure stocks while John Hoover made it two in a row in the four cylinder class.
Matt Latwinski and Darwin Greene lead the twenty five car modified field to the green. The early racing was intense with many of the top runners making their way to the front. A major tangle in turn one forced former winners Alan Rudalavage and Craig Terrell pits side along with points contenders Dan Vauter and Brett Tonkins as well.
When racing settled down a long green flag run had Darwin Greene, Matt Latwinski, Dave Jenkins, and Billy Thornton leading the way. Greene would establish a straight away lead on the field until lap seventeen when caution would reform the pack. At this point of the race Bobby Trapper, Joe Grammes, Dan Pompey, and Mike Colsten were making their way into the battle. After a short lap nineteen caution, Greene would set sail again. With five to go Trapper was on the rear bumper of Greene with Thornton and Grammes in tow. Trapper did everything possible to get by but Greene stayed strong to capture his first ever win at Penn Can. Trapper, Thornton, Grammes, and Jenkins rounded out the top five.
The late model feature was lead to the line by Jeremy Randall and Bud Phillips. Randall took the lead off the start with Phillips, Alan Kellogg, Dan Snyder chasing. The first caution flew on lap twelve for a spinning car in turn two. Randall was still at the point but now had Dan Stone on his tail. Randall protected the low side of the speedway force Stone to the top groove where he got the bite he needed to make the pass for the lead on lap fifteen. Stone kept his car on top and motored home for his second win in two weeks. Tracy Gregory got by Randall for second. Randall held on for third with Randall Paxton and Phillips finishing fourth and fifth.
Casey Plummer and Dwayne Robbins lead the sportsman field to the Green with Robbins jumping to the early lead. Joey Colsten found the outside groove early into the feature and swung by point man Robbins on lap three to take control. Colsten, Robbins, Nick Petrilak, Grant Hilfiger, and newcomer Rodney Hart explored all the racing grooves at Penn Can, all trying for the advantage. Colsten held the top spot the remaining laps to get his first win of the season. Robbins came home second with Hart third followed by Petrilak and Jamie Cortazar.
Jim Sykes used his outside front row starting position in the super stocks to take command of the race. Opening night winner Frank Payne and Dave Nolan would challenge but just did not have enough as Sykes lead the entire feature to get his first ever win at the speedway. Payne, Nolan, Darren Stout, and Jason Bartsch rounded out the top five.
In the pure stock feature twin brothers Rich and Butch Green were the show. Rich would take the lead on lap four while brother Butch came through the field picking cars off lap after lap. 2007 pure stock champion Butch Green got into second on lap seventeen but didn’t have enough to chase down his brother for the win. Jan Carpenter would get third followed by Steve Polhamus, and Tom Garren.
John Hoover found winning to his liking as he was able to back up last week’s win with another in the four cylinder division. Point leader Gary Kinne was force to start deep in the pack and made it to second before laps ran out. Chris Taylor, Tim Price, and Dan Wood filled out the top five.
Penn Notes: The huge crowd witnessed an emotion charged Victory Lane as assistant announcer Craig Hawley chased modified winner Darwin Greene around his car for the interview as the extremely excited Greene made several laps around his car with checkered flag in hand to show his excitement. Greene picked up an extra $100 from former Penn Can competitor Boyd Tyler for winning his heat and feature event. Next week the URC Sprint Cars make their return to Penn Can Speedway. Joining URC will be the modifieds, sportsman, super stocks, and pure stocks.
