O Brien wins at both Intermission and in the Main Event

BROCKVILLE-Danny O Brien has over 100 victories behind the wheel of a DIRT Modified. However, on Saturday night he accomplished something new winning two times, once during the intermission festivities at Brockville Ontario Speedway and then in the 30 lap 358 Modified feature at the Beast of the East.

Jason Riddell grabbed the early lead in the 358 main event until Stephane LaFrance came sailing by and started to dominate in his self designed and built car. However, LaFrance cut things a little too close coming through turn 4 and just tagged one of the tire barriers on the inside of the race track putting his 115 car out for the night and handing the lead back to Riddell. Jason was able to hold on until the final restart with 3 laps remaining. He slid just a bit high in turn four when the green flag flew and that was all that the Pocket Rocket needed as O Brien pulled alongside quickly and grabbed the lead enroute to his second win of 2008. Riddell almost grabbed the lead back once before falling to third behind Kyle Dingwall. Bryan Rogers were fourth and Ryan Poole fifth in their best runs of the season so far.

O Brien earlier in the night decided to compete for the second straight year in the Speedway's bag race. In the bag race, spectators are encourged to bring their street cars out of the parking lot. A paper bag is put over the head of the driver and a navigator sitting in the back street instructs the driver how to get their way around the fast quarter mile. Emma Harper did the driving with Danny sitting in the back seat and dishing out the directions for a 51 second lap, 6 seconds better than the nearest competition. When asked in victory lane, which win meant more, ever the gentleman O Brien talked about how special the win was for Emma.

The barnburner of the night came in the 25 lap Sportsman shootout. 16 year old Matt Billings picked up the lead around the half way mark and held it until the final lap. Chris Raabe managed to scoot around the top of the speedway on the final lap and nip Billings by less than half a car length at the line for his 3rd win of 2008. Cole Dingwall was a strong third followed by Randy Gaudet and Dylan Evoy.

Dana Aikens grabbed the lead early and held on rest of the way beating Steve Billings to the finish in the 20 lap Street Stock feature. Bill Code was third in front of Derrick Eaton and Jack Code. Josh Kane survived some four wide racing in the first few laps and then pulled away for his fourth win of 2008 in the Rookie class. Bob Ray was second with Mike Gaucher, Chris Lloyd and Dillon Sallows in tow.

Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday night with a full program plus the McNamee Concrete Vintage Cars. The green flag drops at 7pm on June 21st.
