HOUGH EDGES BEGOR IN AIRBORNE THRILLER
Matt Woodruff Gets 1st Modified Victory
Plattsburgh, NY - - Ben Hough of Champlain crossed thefinish line 18 inches ahead of Jamy Begor and won the first race of his careerin the most well-driven and exciting J&S Steel Sportsman race in a decadeat Airborne Speedway Sunday. Toby Ebersole, who raced door to door with Begorfor 20 laps, finished third less than a car-length further back. Brian Crisswas a close fourth, two car-lengths ahead of Shawn Duquette.
Hough started on the outside pole and led24 of 25 laps. Begor, who spent nearly the entire race in the outside lane withEbersole alongside underneath him, got a nose in front on lap eight. Houghsealed the win in the Roberts Milk Hauling No. 29 by managing to ease around alapped car with two laps remaining before Begor could pin him behind it.
“I saw Jamycoming and I was thinking, I don’t need anymore cautions,” Hough said. “You cantrust Toby (Ebersole) down low. He didn’t run me up any higher, so I was ableto concentrate on the leader and that made it a really good race,” Begoroffered.
MattWoodruff of Bloomingdale held off a late charge from Patrick Dupree of SaranacLake and won the 30-lap Ernie’s Tools Modified main event. The race went flagto flag green and was the first win of Woodruff’s career. George Foley ofSaranac Lake placed third. Mike Brunoand Chris Cayea completed the top five. Woodruff had to navigate several lappedcars to keep Dupree at bay. “I lost a race last year by being impatient inlapped traffic,” Woodruff said. “I knew Patrick was coming because I waschecking the scoreboard and I saw his number come up.”
