Long Takes Second ASCS SOD Win in a Row with Butler Win
T.J. Buffenbarger, QUINCY, Mich. (June 21, 2008) Darren Long encountered rain during every trip to Michigan during the 2008 racing season. Long broke that streak and started another one by winning Saturdays second leg of the North/South Shootout between the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz and the EFI/National Racing Alliance Sprint Invaders at Butler Motor Speedway.
Long passed Dustin Daggett in heavy lapped traffic with five laps to go and pulled away to his second straight win in the North/South Shootout series and sixth win during his 2008 campaign.
I was just taking it easy early on and knew I had to make my move (on Daggett) in traffic, said Long in victory lane. We didnt run well on Friday and this is a nice comeback for my team.
Long started eighth after the Color Loco redraw and quickly moved into the top five. Then utilizing a pair of cautions early in the event Long positioned himself in third for the restart, quickly disposing of second place and early leader Davey Brown, and set sail after Daggett. Then while racing through traffic Long made his move down the back stretech into turn three on lap 15 and was never headed.
Daggett held on for second with Brown, Ryan Ruhl, and Aaron Shaffer rounding out the top five.
Several of the drivers at the front of the point standings encountered problems. Point leader Ben Rutan dropped out with mechanical problems with only two laps to go, Tim Norman caused one of the caution flags when he stopped on the backstretch, while Brett Mann overcame starting 18th in the main event and finished in sixth.
