Speed Tops in Classic, Trombley Makes the 6th Different Winner

Saturday June 21, 2008

By Rodney Rescott

West Lebanon, NY - The skies were finally clear for an entire night of action at the legendary Valley of Speed. Lebanon Valley Speedway came alive with nearly 20 events on the Anderson Equipment and DMC Racing Products night of racing.

The marquee event of the night was the special 3rd Annual Bubba Tanner Classic presented by DMC Racing. This 23 lap feature event was in memorial of the late Bubba Tanner who had an unmistakable personality, and competed in the now Pro Stocks at Lebanon Valley.

At the drop of the green, the #49 of Henry Warner was out front and in control of the extra distance event. But he theme of the night was high and wide. Coming from about the 4th row, the #24 of Robbie Speed powered to the top of the high banks, and took over from Warner by lap 8. Also on the move was the #54L of last race winner Jimmy Langenback.

Langenback charged from deep in the field to get to 3rd by lap 10. Just ahead was the rookie of Nick Hilt, but the “ageless one” took the runner up spot by lap 13 and set sail on the #24 of Speed. The #54L was on a mission but when he got close, the hood on the #54L flew up and stuck to the windscreen, slowing Langenback enough for Robbie Speed to capture his 2nd Bubba Tanner Classic.

A very excited and appreciative Speed was followed by Jason Casey, Kevin Arnold, Nick Hilt settled in for 4th, and Langenback faded to 5th.
Another exciting Big Block Modified 30 lap event took to the Valley of Speed for the Anderson Equipment feature. Out front at the drop of the green was the FWC #21J of Jeff Trombley and began to pull out a comfortable lead on the field.

Trombley searched around for a lap or two, but found the fast lane high up against the boiler plate. Behind the leader, thee rest of the field was dicing it out for positions. The PLT #60 of Brian Berger darted to the 2nd spot by lap 4 and hung in the #21J’s tire tracks for much of the first half of the race.

Back in the field was the #74 of J.R. Heffner, the #115 of Kenny Tremont, and the #34B of Andy Bachetti all were slicing through the field to get a shot at Trombley. The 1st of only 2 cautions flew on lap 15 for contact between the #87X of Paul Gilardi and the #97 of Bill Singer.
The second was for a spin by the #39 of Ryan Larkin. Once the cautions were over, it was time for Trombley to take control again. But Berger was not gonna let him get away easily this time. Trombley went back to the high side, while Berger charged at the bottom, but just couldn’t get enough traction to take over the top spot.

The #34B of Bachetti swung around the #60 of Berger by lap 20 to make his bid on the top spot, but Trombley found the sweet spot and just powered away.

At the checkers, Jeff Trombley takes his first victory of 2008 making him the 6th different winners in 6 races at the Valley of Speed. Behind Trombley was Bachetti, followed by Heffner, Berger, and Kenny Tremont to round out the top 5.

The Sportsman division took to the high backs for their 20 lap feature event. Rookie Kevin Petrucci leaped out to the early lead, but the lead was short lived as the #25 of Frank Harper charged from the 3rd row starting spot, to the lead by lap 3. Back in the field the #22 of Jeff Watson and the #00 of Chris Kokosa were powering through the field trying to get to the #25 of Harper.

By lap 10 Harper had a pretty commanding lead, followed by Ed Harkins and the #87 of Neil Stratton. After a few cautions that slowed the field, Harper just couldn’t be denied as he powered the Thoma Tire #25 to the win.

Following Harper was Harkin, Stratton, Watson, and Kokosa to complete the top 5.

The Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Modified Super Series were also on tap for another 24 lap feature event. At the front of the field was the #24S of Rich Salisbury and the #40 of Ted Teal. At the drop of the green, it was Salisbury out front early. Behind him was where all the action was happening. The #94 of Ray Hoard swept into the 2nd spot by lap 2 and began to pressure Salisbury for the lead.

By lap 5, Hoard made the pass for the lead and began to pull away. But he couldn’t pull away far enough or fast enough as the #115 of Kenny Tremont Jr. slid into 2nd spot by lap 6.

The #94 of Hoard tried to hold on but the #115 was too strong, and Tremont dropped to the bottom to take the lead by lap 8, and never looked back. A late race charge by Andy Bachetti and J.R. Heffner were going to come up short as Tremont checked out and took the 24 lap win.

Following Tremont was Hoard, Bachetti, Matt Quinn, and Heffner to complete the top 5.

Tim Sayers ended the win streak of Scott Kilmer to take his first of ’08. Kilmer settled for 2nd, Jery Helms Jr., was 3rd, followed by Frank Twing, and John Santolin.

The Pure Stocks put another fantastic show as 52 cars ran 3 events of full fendered action. This weeks winners were: PS#1 - Chuck Lampe, PS#2 - Ed Hatch, and PS#3 - Pete Wiegand.

This Tuesday the 24th is the return of the maniacal “Eve of Destruction” to the high banks. Special events on tap will be the Roll Over Contest, the Reverse Race, Trailer Race, a special Mailman Race, and of course the School Bus Race, along with many other Special Guest and surprises - including a stunt show! The gates will open at 5pm with the “Carnage” to begin at 7pm.

Then on Saturday June 28th, Berkshire Bank presents the Most Unbelievable Fireworks Show for the whole family! All classes will be in action for a night of action on and above the Valley of Speed.

Also, the USHRA Monster Trucks Summer Nationals will take over the high banks coming July 14, 15, and 16. And if that wasn’t enough action for you to handle, then buckle up for the return of the Advanced Auto Parts World of Outlaws® Sprint Car Series as they look to set new records at the Valley of Speed!
