Zemken and Raabe Pick Up Third Victories of 2008 at Brockville
BROCKVILLE-Jessica Zemken said it in victory lane, "You can't win a race on the first lap." However, 7 drivers saw their hopes evaporate on the first turn of the first lap in the 358 Modified feature on Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Zemken was one of those to avoid the mishap and went onto win her 3 feature of the season at the fast quarter mile oval.
It all started when Adam Moore scraped the inside wall going in turn 1 touching off a chain reaction sandwich type crash that claimed a number of cars including defending track champion Danny O Brien, who ended up with his car wedged under Mike Adderley in the front and with Steve Bilow pancaked in behind him at the back. After a lengthy clean up, Jason Riddell made a daring outside pass that vaulted him into the lead for awhile passing early front man John Mulder. Riddell led until he slid a little high in turn 3 allowing Zemken to charge past on the inside in the final third of the 30 lap event. Zemken, then held off a last restart challenge from Kyle Dingwall for the triumph. Dingwall was second followed by Riddell, Brian McDonald and Stephane LaFrance.
Chris Raabe started 17th in the 22 car Sportsman field but by lap 4 was running in second spot in a caution filled 25 lap affair. It didn't take the 17 year old from Napanee to take the top spot and then withstand one good challenge from Randy Gaudet en route to his third win of the season. It's been either win or wreck so far for Raabe at Brockville. Matt Billings finished in the third spot in front of Dylan Evoy and Luke Whitteker, with four of the top five drivers age 17 or under.
Dana Aikens scored his second straight win in the 20 lap Street Stock event. Aikens beat Brock Cullen to the finish line by a couple of car lengths. Steve Billings, Gaetan Amesse and Billy Code rounded out the fast five. Steve Barber led all almost all of the way in the 16 lap Rookie event that was red flagged after a nasty crash in turn 1 on lap 4. Colin Tracey went off the turn, flew into the air and then hit the cement wall guarding the pit area from the race track. Tracey was responsive and talking to ambulance staff as he was transported from track. Mike Gaucher made a late charge to finish second followed by Chris Lloyd, Chris Bakker and Josh Kane, who fell victim to a flat tire on the final circuit. John Gibson was credited with the win in the 12 lap Vintage feature. John McNamee was the first across the line, but penalized two spot for jumping the final green flag handing the win back to Gibson.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday night, June 28th with a full card plus the annual Kid's Tire Race. The green flag drops at 7pm.
