Steve Paine Bags First Win of Season at Canandaigua Speedway; Vanderwall, Welch, and Wiesner Share Victory Lane

The ‘Hurricane’ Steve Paine came into Saturday night winless in 2008 at the ‘Land of Legends’ oval. However, the 9-time Canandaigua Speedway track champion was the class of the field on Churchville Fire Equipment Kid’s Night, taking his no. 7x to victory lane.
Paine’s 80th career Big-Block Modified win at Canandaigua was worth $1,500.
“We’ve been chasing the track all year long,” said Paine in victory lane. “It is hard to believe it is the end of June and we have only raced 6 times here. Last week we changed cars, and tonight we tried some things with the car that had always worked in the past. Tonight everything worked out, and we’re back. I want to thank everyone.”
Point leader Gary Tomkins finished in the runner-up position nearly two seconds behind Paine. Matt Sheppard, Jeff Brownell Jr., and Justin Haers completed the top five finishers.
Dan Wiesner passed Kevin Ridley late in the game Saturday night to pick up his 12th career DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature win at Canandaigua. Ridley hung on for second ahead of Daryl Hilkert, Todd Henderson, and AJ Lewis in the top five.
Mike Welch and Vance Vanderwall also picked up wins in the UMP Street Stock and PureStox main events. Vanderwall picked up the win in his first start of the season, after breaking a distributor in his heat race.
Next Saturday night the Army National Guard and Dash Racewear present “America Night at the Races.” The DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds will be the headliner as they run Twin feature events. The UMP Street Stocks, PureStox, and ESDCA Mod Lites will also be on the racing card. Racing begins at 7pm, with the grandstands opening at 5pm.
