Bob Babbitt and Don Spatorico Break Through at Genesee Speedway
Rich Vleck, BATAVIA, NY (June 28, 2008)- The forecast predicted Mother Nature as the winner on the final Saturday in June, but the result would be a pair of drivers picking up their first win of the season.
Despite getting hit with some light rain between some features, WCJW 1140 and Select Collision Night went on and saw racing at the Genesee County Fairgrounds for the sixth consecutive week.
Bob Babbitt used his outside front row starting position to his advantage, picking up the win in the wildly entertaining Castle Powered Late Model Feature.
Babbitt, from Pavilion, had enough to withstand any advances by Dave DuBois, who held on to his point lead with a runner-up finish.
Carl Shetler put together his best run in his No. 58, as he won his heat, started in the front and stayed up front for the balance of the 20-lap event, finishing in third. Justin Chaddock and JJ Mazur completed the top-five.
The Troyer Chassis Sportsman also had another consummate frontrunner parking it in Victory Lane for the first time in 2008 at Genesee. Don Spatorico, of Ransomville, started in third and picked up the win to help him take over the point lead.
Stubby Pangrazio was again solid, scoring a second place showing in his No. 0. Ricky Newton continued his strong weekend, placing in third, with Rob Pratt and John Venuto completing the top-five.
The final race of the night was the Original Pizza Logs Pro Stocks, which saw the Original Pizza Log-backed No. 28 of Don Barnes returning to Victory Lane for the second time this year.
While Barnes lead the entire way in the caution-free event, Pete Stefanski helped to hang on to his points lead, putting his No. 2 in the No. 2 position. Butch Zimmerman, Mike Martin and Eric Greenlief rounded out the top-five.
Colton Chappius continued his hot streak in the Power Trip Energy Drink Street Stock Feature and was again emotional in Victory Lane with this being his High School Graduation Weekend.
It was the third win of the year for the point leader, who held off Byron Dewitt, who ran up to second on two occasions after getting sent to the back once. Jeb Walworth was third, with Dan Pries and Matt Pfalzer recording season-bests in fourth and rifth respectively.
In the special Professional Driver Institute Genesee/ Black Rock Mini Stock Challenge, Mike Sweeney used the open draw to his advantage to pick up the win in just his second weekend in the No. 73.
Sweeney broke the streak of point leader Brandon Aradine, who would finish eighth on the night. Russ Wassner and Bill Tice, two of the farther travelers were second and third with Mark Forsha and Dan Norton finishing out the top-five.
Early in the night, the DML Driveway Sealing Bandits had Dylan Cecee and David Ahouse invade and dominate for the second straight week, as the Black Rock regulars finished 1st and 2nd. James Meier was a solid third with Tom Urban and Kailey Wassner completing the top-five.
Racing moves into July next week with the return of the Regional Truck Pro Trucks to battle with the Original Pizza Logs Pro Stocks. For more information, visit www.GeneseeSpeedway.com.
