NORRIS GETS HIS FIRST WIN, SHUEY WINS HIS FOURTH AND POLIMEDA TOPS THE LEGENDS AT GRANDVIEW
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JUNE 29, 2008 . . . Young Don Norris Jr. drove the family owned Norris Mechanical No. 976 NASCAR 358 Modified to victory in the 30-lap Whelen Engineering sponsored NASCAR Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. The 20-lap feature race for NASCAR Late Models went to Brian Shuey in the Bob Fisher Chevy sponsored No. 5x for his fourth win of the season. Frank Polimeda came home first in the 15-lap feature for the Rolling Thunder Legends cars.
Marc Fehr set the pace at the start of the 30-lap NASCAR Modified feature race coming from the pole position. On the second circuit of the one-third-mile, banked clay oval Fehr got his entry sideways in turn four causing a multi car accident. Once the track was cleared and the race restarted Don Norris Jr. of Douglassville, PA took the top spot with veteran John Willman close behind and Meme DeSantis holding on to third.
DeSantis had moved up to second spot when a four car tangle on the main straightaway brought out the caution.
With just about half the race complete Norris continued to be the man to beat with Sean Merkel now giving him a serious challenge. In fact the two swapped the lead back and forth a few times but Norris was always in front as they finished a lap.
With 20-laps complete Norris was in first but now had the hard charging Ryan Godown to deal with. Sean Merkel had dropped to third while Doug Manmiller, coming from 14th, was fourth followed by current point leader Jeff Strunk.
For the balance of the 30-lap event Norris stuck to the groove closest to the infield while Ryan Godown rode the high groove. Strunk, now running third, tried to reel them in but had nothing left.
At the finish Norris had a few car lengths on Godown (Ringoes, NJ) with Strunk (Mohnton) getting third. Sean Merkel (Gilbertsville) finished in fourth followed by Doug Manmiller (Shoemakersville).
In victory lane a very excited and happy Norris said that having the right setup and sticking to the bottom is what earned the win for him.
Kyle Merkel lead the 25 car starting field to the green in the 20-lap Late Model feature but it was Rick Todorow who got credit for leading the first lap. In fact the veteran racer who runs Juniper Auto Body in Quakertown, PA looked as if he might be on his way to a feature win as he built up a comfortable lead.
However at the midway point defending champion Brian Shuey was giving Todorow quite a battle for the top spot and Mike Kellner was close in third spot.
One lap later Shuey went to the front and a short time later Kellner was able to grab second and chase Shuey to the finish line.
At the finish Shuey (Shoemakersville) had a comfortable margin of victory over Kellner (Lansdale). Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) was coming on strong at the finish but had to settle for third. Ron Kline (Salford) was fourth and Todorow (Quakertown) held on to grab fifth.
The 15-lap feature for the Rolling Thunder Legends turned into a three car battle down to the finish between winner Frank Polimeda (Fort Lee, NJ), Tom Mayberry and Steve Nederostek. When the checkered flag fell Mayberry was on the rear bumper of Polimeda as they crossed the finish line. Jordan Pascal came home fourth behind Nederostek and Paul Rochelle finished fifth.
Qualifying events for the 44 Modifieds on hand were won by Sean Merkel, Ryan Godown, John Willman and Kurt Spotts. The consolation victories were earned by Rick Schaffer and Tommy Scheetz Jr.
In Late Model qualifying heats wins went to Randy Stoudt, Kyle Merkel and Bill Henning.
Reed Salony, Brian Weitzel and Rob Sobieski won the qualifying heat races for the Rolling Thunder Legends while the consolation race was won by Jordan Pascal who traveled all the way up from Mt. Pleasant, NC.
The Cornerstone Auto Sales Hard Charger awards, worth $50 to each driver, went to Jeff Strunk in the NASCAR Modifieds coming from 14th starting spot to finish 3rd in the feature gaining 11 positions. In the Late Models Ed Trimbur earned the Hard Charger award as he came from 21st to 10th gaining 11 spots.
