Wayne Jelley Continues Streak of 7 Different Winners

Saturday June 28, 2008

By: Rodney Rescott

West Lebanon, NY: The racing faithful stayed for a long night of action at the Valley of Speed. Mother Nature added a touch too much “dust control” for a perfect track, but it was good enough to get all the racing in.

After a multi-hour delay because of the rain, the Berkshire Bank Big Block Modified 30 lap main event took to the speedway with the #45J of Wayne Jelley and the #43 of Keith Flach at the point.

After a quick restart, they were off and running. The field began to string out with Jelley in full control of the field. But the field was slowed by lap 4 for last week’s winner Jeff Trombley as his #21J broke a motor and was forced to the pits for the night.

On the restart, again it was Jelley’s #45 out front, with the #43 of Flach following in his tire tracks. Back in the pack, the #74 of defending champ J.R. Heffner was trying to quietly work his way through the field, but the #34B of Andy Bachetti and the #115 of Kenny Tremont Jr. were trying to do the same thing.

That made for some fantastic racing throughout the entire field. No matter what they were doing back in the field, it had no effect on Jelley, cause he was keeping that car out front. What seemed like forever, but finally, Jelley returns to victory lane for the first time in 2008, and making the 7th different winner in as many races.

Following Jelley at the line was Keith Flach, Matt Quinn held on for a solid 3rd place finish. Steve Hough Charged into a 4th place finish, while Mike King picked up his 2nd top 5 of the year crossing the line in 5th.

The Sportsman 20 lap feature event had some excellent racing action as well as the #88 of Alex Bell and Kale Groff brought the field to the green. Bell took off first, but like the modified, the caution came out early as contact between the #2b of Josh Gaylord and Kevin Petrucci caused the filed to scatter behind them resulting in a multi-car jingle in turn 1.

Once the field was sorted out, the green was back out again, and the #88 charged out to a tremendous lead early. Back in the field, the defending champ of Jeff Watson’s #22 and the #63 of Danny Sanchez were making their way through the field to get a shot at the top spot.

But it did not matter was the defending champ could do, because the first one across the line was the #88 of Alex Bell. But being first over the line was not enough to get through the technical inspection, as the #88 was found to have the wrong gear, handing over the win to another first time winner, Kevin Petrucci.

Following the #24 of Petrucci over the line was Kale Groff’s #2, the #22 of Watson, the #250 of Alan Houghtaling, and Frank Harper’s #25.
The Pro Stock’s got their 20 lap event in after a long delay as well as the #243 of Victor Hopkins and the #315 of Jon Routhier took the field to the green flag. Hopkins had control early, but once the #315 got rolling, Routhier took control of the point by lap 3.

That lead was short lived as the defending champ of Kevin Arnold found thee fast was around the high banks to take over the top spot on lap 5. After that, it was all over but big lady singing.

Kevin Arnold finally gets his first win of 2008, and the 7th different winner in the Pro Stocks as well. Following the #76 was Routhier, Robbie Speed charged to 3rd, the #322 of Jay Casey crossed in 4th, while Paul LaRochelle survives to finish 5th.

The Limited Pro Stocks saw Scott Kilmer takes his 4th win of ‘08. In the Pure Stocks, the 3 events were won by: PS#1 Tom Murphy, PS#2 Lenny Fields, and PS#3 Ray Hall Sr.

Next Saturday July 5th it’s a special Freihofer’s and Herrington’s Lumber $3,000 to Win Big Block Modified Shootout. All classes will be in action along with the 4 cylinders.

Also don’t forget to mark your calendars for some major upcoming events at the Valley of Speed. Coming July 14, 15, and 16 is the USHRA Monster Jam Summer Nationals. Also in July, the annual return of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series on Sunday July 20th, accompanied by the Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Summer Super Series.
