Press Release
Santa Maria, CA - June 28, 2008...Late Model Stocks, D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks were all on the track Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
*Devin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, started eighth in the Late Model Stock field and took just three laps to chase down and pass early leader Dana Beattie, of Lompoc, for the eventual win in the 30-lap main event. Second place Chris Shannon, of Merced, was relentless in his pursuit of Crockett, but had to settle for second place. He was followed to the flag by point leader Steve Drake of San Luis Obispo. Bakersfield's Zack Forster and David Childress were next in line. Second in points Billy Griffin, of Buena Park, set fast time of 14.280 seconds, then broke in his heat race and had to sit out the feature event. Eight-lap heat race winners were Crockett and Forster.
*Santa Maria's Doug Thornton fought for all he was worth to hold off Rich Denman, of Coalinga, and Danny Lauer, of Santa Maria, for his first win in some six years in the 25-lap IMCA Modified feature. Tommy Laliberte, of San Jose, placed fourth and point leader Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo, fifth. Denman, Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber, and Tulare's Greg Mancebo captured 8-lap heat races.
*The 20-lap Factory Stock main event was almost the Kirk Morgan show once again. After working his way to the front from his seventh starting position in the 19-car field, Morgan battled with fellow Santa Maria driver Glen Sparks for the lead. Three laps from the finish, Morgan passed Sparks for the lead, only to be repassed in traffic for the victory. Arroyo Grande's Kevin Linson was third, and Santa Maria drivers Michael Frazier and Dale Sylvester fourth and fifth. David Addamo, of Santa Maria, and Ray Pezzi, of Terra Bella, won 8-lap heat races.
*Justin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, came home first in the 20-lap Mini Stock main event for his first feature victory of the year. The win moved Crockett into a tie for the points lead with Nipomo's Justin Marsh who crashed heavily with second in points Jeremy Heroux, also of Nipomo, while both were running in the top-three. There was concern over Marsh's well being for several minutes while safety crew members checked him out. Fortunately he was able to crawl out of the car under his own power and walk away. Atascadero's Darrin Davis, Santa Maria's Daylan Coffey, and Lompoc's Jeff Biggs and Mike Weigel filled in the top-five. Davis and Weigel took the 8-lap heat races.
*Next Saturday night Bandit Sprint Cars, D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks will be on the 1/3-mile oval. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:15 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices will be $15.00 for adults, $11.00 for seniors (65+), $5.00 for children six to twelve, five and under free. Credit cards are not accepted. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
