GEORGIE STEVENSON MEMORIAL ON TAP THIS FRIDAY JULY 4…By Gary Lileck
Forestville, PA – June 30, 2008 – On Friday July 4, Big Diamond Raceway will present the 29th annual Georgie Stevenson Memorial. This season’s event is the third under the direction of promoters Buddy Biever, Dave Dissinger, and Barry Bashore. The 358 Modifieds will headline this year’s card, as they are competing in a 35-lap feature paying $3000 to win. The Sportsman (25-laps $1000 to win) and Roadunners (20-laps $300 to win courtesy of Becker VW Parts and Service) will also be on hand. It is presented by Moyer Electronics.
Georgie Stevenson was one of the speedway’s most supportive fans. The youngster could be found in the spectator stands on any given Friday evening. Sadly, Georgie Stevenson lost his battle with cancer at the young age of twelve.
During Georgie’s battle with cancer, he worked hard to raise money for the cause. Georgie won the Optimist-Man of the Year Award in 1979 from the Pottsville Optimist Club for all of his hard work. Since Georgie’s passing, his father George continued to work hard by helping the families of terminally ill children. Georgie’s younger brother, Chris Stevenson continues that tradition today.
Big Diamond Raceway quickly began a memorial race in Georgie’s honor. Every year during this event, a collection is taken to benefit the ill children. Many drivers make a point to attend this show, as it holds a special meaning to everyone.
In the 2007 Georgie Stevenson Memorial race, Jeff Strunk of Mohnton won the 358 Modified main event, his second straight GSM triumph. Craig Whitmoyer of Humburg won the Sportsman race and Kevin Olenick of Forestville emerged victorious in the Roadrunner feature.
Gates open at 5:00PM, warm-ups begin at 7:15PM, and qualifying starts at 7:45PM. Admission is: Adults $15.00, Seniors /Students/Military $13.00, children 10 and under free when accompanied by an adult.
