BLANEY OUTSMARTS MAYES TO RECORD $10,000 ALL STAR SPRINT WIN
ROSSBURG, OH (June 28) – Saturday’s victory at Eldora Speedway put Dale Blaney right where he wants to be – the most recent winner going into the upcoming Kings Royal weekend, with the most recent knowledge of how to master Eldora’s oft-tricky surface. Blaney’s $10,000 victory came on the closing night of Ohio ’s revered Sprint Speedweek, presented by the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions, and over a stout 36-car field. Jon Henry (Moser Modified) and Jeff Babcock (Advance Auto Parts Stocks) closed out the evening which carried sponsorship from Best Western Dayton NW
Early afternoon thunderstorms, similar to those that followed the entire Speedweek, threatened to bring yet another halt to an evening of racing, but the Eldora officials remained adamant that the show must go on, and the All Star drivers responded by taking the thunder to the surface.
Ed Lynch, Jr. made his first 2008 Speedweek appearance as the defending champion of the $10,000 Eldora event and looked in shape to return the top prize to Apollo, PA. After picking up a $300 quick time award from the St. Henry (OH) Commercial Club, Lynch darted into the early lead of the 30-lap finale, with Blaney and Brock Mayes hot on his heels.
Lynch looked powerful, but the surprise of the night was Mayes, who on lap six shot past Blaney to assume runner-up honors and then on the following circuit of the one-half mile clay oval, did the same thing to Lynch to take over the top spot.
Looking to pick up his first- ever Eldora win, Mayes began using lapped traffic to his advantage in the event that would eventually go non-stop. The Bucyrus, OH native remained in control; however, the cagey Blaney never lost sight of Mayes’ position.
With ten laps to go, Blaney, who calls Cortland , OH home, began reeling in Mayes. Lynch, meanwhile, had a tire go bad and was falling deep into the pack.
Lap by lap, Blaney would inch in on Mayes and with six laps to go on the one-half mile clay oval, he made the move that would power him to victory. He will now transfer that knowledge into the July 11 and 12 Kings Royal weekend and a possible $50,000 payday. Blaney is now stranger to the fabled Kings Royal throne; having won the event in 2000.
Mayes hung on for a strong runner-up position, while defending All Star champion Greg Wilson powered to third, with Dean Jacobs and Randy Hannagan completing the top five.
Henry has been a threat all season long with his potent Moser UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) Modified and captured yet another victory Saturday night.
In the early stages of his career, Henry was labeled ‘the impatient one’, but Saturday night, he allowed patience to rule and methodically moved his way into the lead. But one there, it meant disaster for everyone else, as Henry was not to be denied. Veteran Jerry Bowersock tried in vain to roll in Henry, but couldn’t quite get the job done and had to settle for second at the finish. Early race leader John Brooks crossed the line third, while Mike Hohlbein turned in his best-ever Eldora run to record a fourth place finish with Matt Westfall coming from deep in the field to finish fifth.
Babcock was doing double duty throughout the evening and after crashing in the Moser Modified finale, he became even more determined to excel in the Advance Auto Parts night capper. True to his goal, Babcock outsmarted Kevin Gossard in the early stages to take the lead he was to hold to finish. The defending champion of the division bested Mike Dirkson, Bob Burch, Gabe Wombolt and Shawn Phillippi at the finish line.
