JACK JOHNSON LOOKING TO RETURN TO VICTORY LANE AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY THIS TUESDAY.
KIRKWOOD, NY…Over the 58 year history of Five Mile Point Speedway the mid-week Modified special events have always showcased the best talent in the northeast. This Tuesday, July 8th is expected to be no different. This Tuesday the Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour will do battle in a 75 lap event. The RoC Sportsman will also be in action with a 40 lapper. All of the action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
The stars have always flocked to the quarter mile in the past and there have been several invaders that have taken a liking to the speedway. One of those drivers expected on Tuesday is Duanesburg, NY driver Jack Johnson.
Johnson was one of only a few non-weekly competing drivers that made the greatest all time Five Mile Point Speedway top 50 drivers list that was put together by the media back in 2000. Another one of those invaders that made the list in 2000 was Brett Hearn. Both are expected to be on hand this Tuesday for the huge mid-week special.
Johnson, a Southern Tier Open winner in 1975, a two-time Southern Tier 100 winner along with countless other FMP wins will certainly be a factor in this Tuesday’s event. Last year “Jumpin’ Jack” returned to the Point after a several year absence. The popular driver has also logged four Five Mile Point Speedway anniversary special event victories in 1977, 1978, 1982 and 1985. Last season he immediately returned to the form that won him so many special events at Five Mile Point Speedway in the past. In last years July RoC event he finished in the runner-up slot to Billy Decker and in the August RoC race he wound up ninth.
The 2007 Race of Champions Dart Dirt Southern Tier 100 last fall looked like history could be made as Ronnie Johnson (son and current northeast star) drove the patented number 12a that carried his dad to so many victories. The elder Johnson was in the Alton and Carole Palmer 76a that he will compete in this Tuesday. The two dominated the field during the early stages of the fall classic last year as they ran one and two. Ultimately Jack Johnson would retire from the event after a flat tire sent him to the pits after leading the majority of the way. Ronnie Johnson took over the lead only to have a fuel pump issue sideline him as well with less than a dozen laps remaining. Stewart Friesen, who will also be in competition Tuesday went on to win the Southern Tier 100.
This Tuesday’s 75 lap RoC Dart Dirt Modified event will be the third of 2008 on the point trail. Race one at the legendary Selinsgrove Speedway was won by the “Quaker Shaker” Rick Laubach and most recently Danny Johnson emerged the winner of the “Victoria 200” at Utica Rome Speedway.
The list of invaders expected at the Point is impressive as drivers like defending series champion Pat Ward, last year’s race winner Billy Decker, Jeff Rudalavage, Joey Grammes, Jeff Strunk, Stewart Friesen, David VanHorn, Billy VanPelt, Jerry Higbie Jr. and many more will be in action.
