Big Money Pay Day for Larkin as he is 1st to Repeat

Saturday July 5, 2008

By: Rodney Rescott

West Lebanon, NY: One light rain shower: 2 hours, one super fast Valley of Speed: 1 hour over the scheduled start, the 1st repeat winner and a $3,000.00 paycheck: priceless….. for Ryan Larkin.

Freihofer’s Baking Company put up a big payday for the Big Block Modified 30 lap feature event with the help of Herrington Lumber.
But the race wasn’t going to be uneventful, as the field took to the green flag with J.C. Flach at the front. But that’s when it all went wrong. Rich Salisbury’s #24 went too deep into turn one causing the #24 to wash up the track, making contact with the #77J of Flach.
Flach slowed enough to bobble the rest of the field as everyone scrambled to recover. The field then sorted out a bit down the backstretch, but the trouble wasn’t over for Salisbury yet. With the earlier contact, a flat tire caused the #24 to slow into turn 3, and contact ensued from behind with Andy Bachetti and Mike King as they to avoid the slowing #24.

As a result, the red flag flew immediately as the track was completely blocked with race cars. Involved were: the #77J of Flach, the #64 of Donnie Ackner, Mike King’s #55K, Kenny Tremont Jr., Andy Bachetti, Danny Burl, Jeff Trombley, Loren Browe, Dan Humes’ #0, and Salisbury’s #24.

After a brief delay in the action, the field got under way again. This time it was Ryan Larkin out front of the field with his #39. The next 29 laps were a shootout as the #60 of Brian Berger once again hounded Larkin for the lead on several occasions, but to no avail. After all was said and done, Larkin kept control of the top spot, and powered to his 2nd victory of 2008, and the first driver to repeat at the high banks.
Following Larkin at the stripe was Berger, Hector Stratton’s #87 was 3rd, followed by Eddie Marshall, and Mark Flach Jr.’s #77F.

And if that excitement wasn’t enough, the Pro Stock’s had their shot at the Valley of Speed with a 20 lap feature event. Rob Maxon took control of the field at the start, but the #12S of Matt Shadic took over going down the backstretch.

But the #322 of Jay Casey wanted no part of that and took over the field and 1st place by lap 2. Caution flew on lap 5 to slow the field, that only helped the rest of the field get another shot at the lead. But Casey successfully denied all comers to the front until lap 14, when Mr. Excitement, Jay Corbin, charged past Casey to take the lead.

After that, there was nothing anyone could do but race for 2nd, as thee #8 of Corbin won his 2nd race of 2008 as well. Following Corbin over the stripe was Casey, Paul LaRochelle was 3rd, 4th was Robbie Speed while Jason Casey raced his way to 5th.

The Sportsman division was the next on the program with another action packed 20 lap feature event. At the drop of thee green, it was the #3 of Kim Lavoy in control of the top spot. The #80 of Kory Sandstedt wanted to lead for a while, and took over from Lavoy on lap 5.

Once Sandstedt got out front, he began to check out on the field. Danny Sanchez made his way through the field from his 6th starting spot to take over 2nd by lap 11, but just couldn’t mount a strong challenge for the lead.

Even a caution on the next to last lap could keep Sandstedt from his first win of ‘08. Sandstedt crossed the finish line first followed by Sanchez, Kyle Hoffman had a strong 3rd place finish, with Lavoy holding on for 4th, and Chris “Speedracer” Kokosa completed the top 5.

The Limited Pro Stocks saw Tim Sayers take the victory. And in the other full fendered class, thee Pure Stocks, the 3 winners were: PS#1 - Lynn Wesley, PS#2 - Tom Murphy, and PS#3 - Al Relyea. The 4 cylinders were also in action with Todd Goldstein winning the Duel Cam Class, and Shawn Perez taking the Single Cam Class.

Next Saturday Night and the legendary high banks it’s Gendron’s Truck Centers Night of Features. A full racing program that will include the Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series. Also, mark your calendars for the annual return of the 2 largest shows presented at Lebanon Valley Speedway.

First is the return of the USHRA Monster Truck Summer Nationals coming July 14, 15, and 16 presented by Joe Tornabene’s GMC and CARQUEST Autoparts. Then it’s a night a speed, as the Advanced Auto Parts World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series invades the Valley of Speed, Sunday July 20th, with the 358 Super Series.
