JIMMY PHELPS TO TOUR ‘DOWN UNDER’ IN JANUARY

The ‘Americanisation’ of V8 Dirt Modified racing will continue next season, with confirmation that Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series driver Jimmy Phelps will journey ‘down under’ in January for a whistlestop two-race Australian tour. Phelps, a factory ‘Troyer’ driver in his native upstate New York, currently sits fourth on the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series standings, having recently finished second in the ‘Budweiser 100’ at Autodrome Granby (QUE).
The Phelps tour has been organised by Troyer’s Australian distributor JBR Motorsport, with Jimmy to pilot one of the recently arrived 2008 Troyer Max Flex chassis for the JBR Motorsport outfit.
“Having the American drivers come out regularly and compete in Dirt Modifieds really lifts the profile of the class.” offered JBR Motorsport co-owner Simon Jupe. “ I really feel the more we can nurture the relationship between the Dirt Modifieds in the US and here, the stronger the class will be”
“I definitely see this as an annual thing and is something that I will continue to work on with the guys at Troyer to ensure it happens, I'd also love to offer (a drive) to some of the other Troyer drivers such as Danny Johnson”
While the sight of American V8 Dirt Modified drivers on our shores is nothing new, Jupe is coy about the possibility of an Australian driver contesting races in the US.
“I won't say too much just yet but it is an idea we have been discussing. I'll just say that as the adoption of the Troyer cars becomes more popular with teams here in Australia, there may be a reward for the top performing Troyer driver in the future”
Jimmy Phelps will contest the two-night ‘Modified Masters’ in Lismore over the Australia Day weekend (January 24 & 25) as well as an event in Maryborough (Qld) the following weekend.
