Cisney and Eichelberger Win Williams Grove Sportsman Features

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

The young lions of the Williams Grove Speedway Sutliff Auto Group super sportsman class bared their claws Saturday night. Dylan Cisney and Aaron Eichelberger, two of the Williams Grove Saturday Night Series young generation, won the two super sportsman features. Cisney claimed the first feature, a race rained out two weeks ago. Eichelberger won the evening-ending super sportsman feature.

Dylan Cisney, a 15-year old from Blair Mills, started the first 20-lap feature on the outside of the front row. He sprinted into the lead on the opening lap. Cisney opened up a ten-length lead over Aaron Eichelberger.

A lap-seven caution erased the large Cisney lead. During the caution second place driver Aaron Eichelberger pitted his car.

Following the restart Cisney raced away from the second place machine of David Socks III. Despite several cautions that wiped out his lead, the youngster never faltered the remaining laps. Cisney won by a half-straightaway distance over David Socks III, Carmen Perigo Jr., Rick Barr and Paul Miller.

Like Dylan Cisney, Aaron Eichelberger started the second super sportsman feature on the outside of the front row. Eichelberger, a graduate from nearby Northern High School, maintained a six-length advantage over John Garman.

The race was slowed on lap six when Dylan Cisney came to a stop on the front stretch. Eichelberger pulled away from the field after the restart. An intense battle for second developed between Garman, Jay Fannasy, Bobby Hockenberry and Frankie Herr.

A caution flag with four-laps remaining was the break Frankie Herr needed. While Aaron Eichelberger held the lead position, Herr quickly passed the cars of Garman, Fannasy and Hockenberry. On the final lap Herr narrowed the gap between himself and leader Eichelberger. Aaron Eichelberger held the edge to the finish line and won by three lengths over Herr, Garman, Fannasy and Hockenberry.

Bobby Beard won the AJ’s Truck and Trailer Center 358 late model feature. The race was the second part of the 358 Late Model Shootout, a two-race series involving Trailways and Williams Grove Speedways.

The outside of the front row was the lucky position on this evening. Just like the two super sportsman feature winners, Bobby Beard began the race in second place. In the early laps Beard and Craig Wagaman raced away from the 26-car field.

Due to several restarts, Bobby Beard was never able to escape the pressure of Craig Wagaman. A caution flag with three laps remaining gave Wagaman one last run for the first place prize money. But on this evening Beard never slipped and he recorded his second Williams Grove feature win of 2008.

With this victory and his second place finish the night before at Trailways, Bobby Beard won the 358 Late Model Shootout.

The L.B. Smith Ford street stock division staged two feature races. The first was a make-up race from two weeks ago. The second was the scheduled race for the evening. Doug Hoffman had a night he will never forget as he won both main events sponsored by Heritage Acres.

The first 20-lap street stock feature was the finest race of the night. Dave Motter led the first two laps before being passed by Rodney Clouser. Clouser and Kory Sites had a very intense battle for the lead, with the number one spot being exchanged several times.

The Clouser Camaro was leaving a trail of thick smoke. During a caution flag on lap seven, Clouser dropped out of the event. Kory Sites now held command of the race with Doug Hoffman in second.

Hoffman went to work on the outside lane. With each passing lap he gained more ground on Sites. On the final lap the two leaders were even coming off the second turn and raced wheel to wheel into the final turns. Hoffman was able to gain a slight edge off the final turn. At the finish line Hoffman won by a half-length over Sites. Jim Salisbury, Kevin Sigler and Walt Lemmon completed the top five.

The second victory for Hoffman was much easier. Hoffman started on the pole while his main competitor, Kory Sites, was back in 12th. While Hoffman held a comfortable lead, Sites was rapidly advancing to the front. By the end of lap four Sites had captured second place.

As the laps progressed, Kory Sites kept constant pressure on Doug Hoffman. Hoffman led the all way and he won his second of the evening, his third straight, over Sites, Gary Welsh, Kevin Sigler and Jim Salisbury.

Brian Wentzel won the Credit Connection four-cylinder feature. Wentzel won by the barest of margins over John Stoll Jr.

Dave Leidy, Brian Wentzel and Kevin Thomas exchanged the lead several times over the early laps of the feature. The battle for first settled into a two-car race between Thomas and Leidy. With two laps remaining the race for the lead ended with the two leaders tangling in turn three.

Following the restart John Stoll Jr. and Brian Wentzel raced side by side the final two laps. In the final turns Wentzel went to the outside while Stoll dropped to the very bottom of the track. They raced off the final turn and Wentzel won by the length of the front fender. Joe Jakubic, Dale Kreiser and Jason Geesaman followed Wentzel and Stoll.

Heat wins for the 37 Sutliff Auto Group super sportsman went to John Garman, Gerry Strawser, Doug Hendricks and Jay Fannasy. Steve Fannasy and Russ Mitten won the two consolation events.

Jake Lettich, Gene Knaub and Mike Spangler won the qualifying races for the 26 AJ’s Truck and Trailer Center 358 late models.

No heat races were staged for the 21 L.B. Smith Ford street stocks and the 12 Credit Connection four-cylinders.

The Williams Grove Saturday Night Series will not race next week. The series will return in two weeks with super sportsman and street stocks racing. The 358 late models and the four-cylinders will also be in action and each class will have two feature events.

Also taking place on July 26 will be the Picnic in the Park and Kids Night. The Picnic in the Park will be an afternoon-long picnic, giving the fans a chance to meet and talk with their favorite drivers. Admission to the picnic is free. Admission for the racing, featuring six feature races, will be just ten dollars.
