Marshall Finally Drives to a $3,000 Payday, Langenback Tops in Pro Stocks

West Lebanon, NY: The super fast, and dry Valley of Speed was just what the doctor order for Eddie Marshall and J.R. Heffner, while a raging battle in both the Sportsman and Pro Stocks had the packed house on their feet all night!
The Gendrons’ Truck Centers Night of Features started off with a bang as the mighty Big Block Modified took to the high banks for another special $3,000 to win feature event. At the front of the field, Bill Singer’s #97 and the #64 of Donnie Ackner.
At the drop of the green the field was led by Ackner’s #64. Ackner controlled the field for the first few laps, even as the caution flag flew for a few minor incidents that included a spin by Lorne Browe, and a blown engine by Dave McFeeters.
Ackner’s lead was all over by lap 9 as the #87 of Hector Stratton took over the top spot from a slowing #64. A few short laps later, Ackner’s ride went up in smoke going down the backstretch causing a few cars to spin including Keith Flach, Mike King, and the worsed of them all was Wayne Jelley’s #45 which sustained heavy front end damage.
With Stratton out front, it seemed like lights out for the rest of the field, but, that wasn’t to be for the cagey veteran Marshall. The #98 fired up on the ensuing restarted and began hounding Stratton. By lap 12, Marshall powered out front of Stratton, and that was pretty much all anyone had for the #98. A late race run by the #74 of defending champ J.R. Heffner was not even enough to shake Marshall as he takes his first win of 2008.
Following Marshall was Heffner, Andy Bachetti finished 3rd, Mark Flach Jr. was 4th, followed by a strong 5th place finish for Kenny Tremont Jr.
The Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series was also in action at the Valley of Speed for a 24 lap feature event. By lap 5 Steve Hough’s #34 took over the top spot with the #5 of J.R. Heffner, and the #4 of Andy Bachetti hot in tow.
The 3 hot shoes ran nose to tail for a number of laps waiting for the other to make a mistake. That bobble finally came on lap 14 as Hough left the high side open for Heffner, and the #5 didn’t let it go to waste. Heffner took over the top spot as Hough and Bachetti battled for 2nd.
Heffner checked out and took home the win with Bachetti crossing the line 2nd. Hough salvaged a 3rd place run, while Matt Quinn charged into 4th and Rich Salisbury held on for 5th.
The full fendered Pro Stocks took to the high banks for their 20 lap shoot out with the #35 of Rick Dempsey out front early. He held thee top spot for about 5 laps as he too suffered from a motor going south handing over the top spot to the “ageless one” Jimmy Langenback.
On the restart, the real battle began. Langenback was out front with the #76 of Kevin Arnold in tow, and the #8 of Jay Corbin. For the next 10 laps, the 3 battled side-by-side, and bumper to bumper for some exciting full fendered racing.
But all the excitement came to a crashing end as Corbin’s #8 drove up the track in turn 4, and made enough contact with Arnold causing the #76 to jump tires and go airborne into the outside wall, ending his night. Corbin restarted at the tail end of the field for the contact, leaving Langenback out front and in control.
At the stripe, the hall of fame #54L takes the win, with the #12S of Matt Shadic charging into 2nd. Paul LaRochelle crossed the line 3rd, followed by Jay Casey, and Sean Corr’s #8R.
The Sportsman had their 20 lap dash that went nearly green to checkers, with a quick caution at the beginning for the #44 of Jeff Kelly, the #11A of Kyle Armstrong but by lap 4, the #5 of Chris Tryon charged out front and never looked back.
With nearly a half track lead at the checkers, Tryon takes his 2nd win of 2008. Following the #5 was the #00 of Chris “Speedracer” Kokosa, Kolby Schroder was 3rd, Jeff Watson powered into 4th, followed by Neil Stratton.
To cap the night of features off was a special Boomer’s Performance Pure Stock Clash that had been postponed a number of times. The Pure Stock Clash was in memorial of the late Robert “Boomer” Bedell who spent his life racing and supporting racing at tracks across the region, but mainly at Lebanon Valley Speedway.
The 20 lap clash was underway with 21 cars in the field. At the point was the #18 of Herb Tompkins, but it was short lived, as the battle from behind was too much to handle. The #82 of Phil Wood powered under the #18 to take thee lead by lap 5.
A three way battle for the lead ensued with the #14 of Al Relyea and the #78 of Pete Weigand hounding the #82 of Wood. The battle continued for a number laps until the #78 of Weigand spun trying to get the lead on lap 11.
Then it was down to 2 - Wood and Relyea battled it out for the remaining laps, but it was Wood that outlasted the current points leader to take the checkers and a $500.00 check. Relyea crossed the line 2nd, followed by Ray Hall Sr, Mike Eichstedt, and Doug Olds completed the top 5.
The Limited Pro Stocks say Tim Sayer take the win, and in the regular Pure Stock events, the winners were: PS#1 Jim Fachitti, PS#2 was won by Tom Murphy, and PS# 3 was taken by Mike Eichstedt.
Pack up the family and come to the Valley of Speed as it’s transformed into the Valley of Monsters, as the USHRA Monster Truck Summer Nationals take over the high banks. July 14, 15, and 16 will be full of all your Monster Truck stars like Tom Meents’ Maximum Destruction, The Escalade, Batman, and of course, the legendary Dennis Anderson and Grave Digger!
Then on Saturday July 19th, the Rifenburg Construction 50th Anniversary Modified Construction Clash, plus the start of the summer series titled the Modified King of the Track. All classes will be in action including the 4 cylinders.
