Brock Young Memorial Next For BRP CanAm Series

East Smethport, PA…The BRP CanAm Late Model Series returns to the McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, PA on Saturday July 19 for the 6th Annual Brock Young Memorial event. This very special event is a tribute to Brock Young, a 360 late model race car driver, who lost his life in a 2002 highway crash.

The Young family and the management of McKean County Raceway have made this an annual event since 2003. One for Brock (his race car number was 22) is the “story” behind the $1-4-22 winner’s share that is paid to the race winner.

“The extra money is one thing, but the real deal is the tribute to this fine young man and his family,” states BRP CanAm Series director Bruce Thompson. “It is also important to note that McKean County Raceway is and has been a key link in the BRP CanAm Series. Dennis Shutt was a founding partner of the Series when he was the race track lease holder of McKean County Raceway. Brock’s race at MCR is part of the great history of the BRP CanAm Late Model Series.”

The history of winners of Brock’s race is Todd Rice in 2003, Jeremy Wonderling in 2004, Darren Kish in 2005, Rich Michael in 2006, and Larry Knowles in 2007. Wonderling and Knowles will both be back for another $1422 check and another 1-4-22 trophy.

Favorites to be added to the list of Brock’s race winners include two MCR veterans who currently own the top two spots on the BRP CanAm point standings, Jeff Chesebro and Steve Dixon. Dixon is a two time 2008 MCR winner and tops the point standing there. Chesebro is the defending MCR track champion and has been doing some “experimenting with different race setups” at MCR. The experiments have a single focus- to win Brock’s race.

Dixon and Chesebro may be favorites, but there are about 30 others who have a legitimate chance for the race win. Included in that “others group” are Dan Cobb, the most recent MCR 360 late model race winner, and strong contingents from both Genesee Speedway and Woodhull Raceway. Genesee Speedway will not be racing on the 19th so many from the track will make the trip south to MCR. Heading the list of Genesee invaders are Bob Babbitt, Dave DuBois, Jim Johnson, Brian Kotarski, and Jon Rivers. All of them have won at their Saturday night race place in 2008. Vern Wasson, owner and promoter of Woodhull Raceway is making a “special deal” with his 360 late model drivers to minimize any issues with racing at MCR for this special event. Topping the list of Woodhull drivers who follow the BRP CanAm Series are Glenn Whritenour, Wayne Robertson, Bob Buono, Mikey Wonderling all of whom will be attempting to win at MCR early and then make an interstate journey on back roads for a late night win at Woodhull. Scooter Pangrazio, winner of the most recent BRP CanAm Series event (Canandaigua June 24), will be looking for two in a row and his biggest pay day ever. Matt Cobb (not related to Dan Cobb) has logged many laps and recorded many wins at MCR. Matt is a contender to win whenever / wherever he and his dad unload their Austin Distributing / Little Chicago Rocket. These Cobbs live just over Rew Mountain in Bradford and would like nothing better than a BRP CanAm / MCR victory on Brock’s night. The father / son duo of Dave and Bruce Miller are consistently well prepared and fast, but too often short on luck. Perhaps lady luck will smile on one of them for this special event.

Beamer Guzzardi currently stands fourth in Series point standings and with that is the leading rookie driver on the Tour. Beamer’s driver profile sheet would benefit with a win and without doubt he is capable.

The Native Americans are restless and a win would be very popular with everyone if either Jon Lichy, Neil Patterson, or Mike Williams could park their race car in the MCR Victory Lane.

Timid Tim Schram has been his usual quiet self during the first half of the Series. Schram is an MCR weekly racer who is capable of a win.

Paul Grigsby’s luck has been non-existent in the six Series events leading up to Brock’s race. Officer Grigsby is about ready to put everyone else in cuffs, but he isn’t even sure that would get him his second career Series win.

The 2008 Series has produced five winners from the six events completed prior to Brock’s race. Steve Dixon started his two gun salute with wins at Merrittville and Little Valley. Glenn Whritenour tamed the Woodhull high banks in May. Jeff Chesebro added to his career win count (now 7) at Humberstone. Dave DuBois won his first ever Series event at Black Rock. Scooter Pangrazio joined the elite Series winners list at Canandaigua.

The list of potential winners goes on. The reality of the prior Brock Young Memorial top five finishers is:

2003 – Todd Rice, Bruce Miller, Bob Dixon, Jason Dupont, Doug Ricotta

2004 – Jeremy Wonderling, TJ Shaw, Todd Rice, Bob Dixon, Dustin Croft

2005 – Darren Kish, Tim Schram, AJ Young, Jeremy Wonderling, Ron Baker

2006 – Rich Michael – not a BRP CanAm Series event

2007 – Larry Knowles, Steve Dixon, Bruce Miller, Randy Hall, Jeff Chesebro

MCR gates will open at 5:00 with racing at 7:00 on Saturday July 19 for the 6th Annual Brock Young Memorial – BE THERE!
